Tri-ang R114 and R118

I recently have acquired some Hornby and Tri-ang rolling stock and among them are the two cars listed above. They are molded in a ghastly orange plastic. I saw in another forum that a gentleman was modifying the flat car by hollowing out the center and leaving only the cross members -and he indicated that it was a prototype car not a fantasy one. Is the box car/goods wagon modeled on a real car or is it a fantasy piece?  Any advice on a proper  color scheme -if one exists-would be appreciated.
