RMweb Gold rodent279 Posted November 6, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 6, 2014 Morning all, just a quick question. What thickness of brass sheet is best for scratchbuilding 4mm scale loco frames & bodies? Also for carriage bodysides? cheers N
micknich2003
Rodent, I always use 10th thick nickel siver sheet, slightly more expensive, but it "works" better then brass. For loco frames, I use 32th brass strip as available from K&S metal stand.
Guest Lyonesse
Morning all, just a quick question. What thickness of brass sheet is best for scratchbuilding 4mm scale loco frames & bodies? Also for carriage bodysides? cheers N 0.010in nickel silver is the standard for 4mm loco bodies, although I find myself using 0.008 (boilers), 0.005 (odd small details) and 0.002 (boiler bands) now as well, whereas I once only used 0.010. Oh, and 0.008in tinplate from baby formula / coffee / paint stripper tins is very good for step treads, and I use 0.015in nickel for valences, buffer beams and the like. I usually use 0.018in for main frames, with 0.015in L-shaped spacers/stretchers. Carriage bodies I couldn't say, although my first guess would be 0.008 in for steel paneled stock.
