Jack
I've been sorting out some of my stock, with a view to having a bit of a clear out. One of the things I picked up very cheaply recently was a Hornby Maunsell FK in BR green. The FK's don't seem to hold their price well, so rather than waste time trying to sell it I thought i'd have a 'bash'. In Welch's book 'Southern Coaches in Colour' is a picture of an FK in what looks like green with the departmental number 081256 - being used as an office in Chichester. I've also found this link : http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/pics/maunsell3687.html The question is, does anyone know of a list of (southern) departmental types and where they were used? Was the brown in the picture above fairly standard? Welch also has a picture of an FK in this brown colour. A good side picture of a departmental FK would be good so I can see what other lettering needs attaching. Thanks
RMweb Premium keefer Posted November 11, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2014 Departmentals.com has an index of coaches: http://departmentals.com/sightings Presumably the ones you're after would be the DS-series and 08xxx internal users (if 08 is the internal user prefix for the SR). This used to bring up links to pics of vehicles, but it seems you have to register first
eastwestdivide
I've got a booklet from 1982ish on the DS series coaches from "Lineside Publications". Numbering, former identity, locations, use etc. but no photos Could only find two Maunsell FKs in there: ADS70035, ex 7405, converted 10/59 to S&T Instruction coach, and 9/76 to internal use as 083229, CM&EE office, Basingstoke, broken up 5/80 DS70143, ex 7404, converted 7/61 to CCE Staff & Tool coach, for Ashford PAD, disposed of for scrap 6/67. Plenty of other Maunsells listed, but no other FKs that I could find. Seem to recall that many departmental coaches had a vaguely "mud" colour, like the one in your link, possibly a result of low maintenance of something approximating to olive drab. hmrspaul
This new fangled computer won't allow me to add a quote or a link to external website. The mud colour mentioned earlier is simply the colour that olive green went after a few years, especially on the SR. Lots of pictures on my website including some newly painted and then a few years on. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/srdepartmentalstock Paul
Jack
Thanks for the help. Time to go and mull over a plan. I'm not sure I want to start though if I don't have a direct photo to work from ...

I recall 083229 well, having had the chance to get a few bits off it before it was broken. It was a restriction 1 or 0 and I have the restriction plate from it somwewhere!
