Now I'm not too precious about my layout 'Fen End Pit' but I do think it is bad form to find photographs of your layout printed in a magazine without being asked. So, I hope you liked the picture(s) of Fen End Pit in the November RM. I've not seen them as by the time I found out about it the magazine was off the shelves. I don't know who took the pictures or wrote the article which used them, please consider yourself glared at, it isn't as if I wouldn't have been glad to see them published or that I'm difficult to get hold of to ask.

From what you say, as you've not seen them, are you certain they are of your layout ?

Just asking.

Yes, one of my friends had spotted them and I got several 'oh there was a picture of this in RM at the show I did in Epping last week.

It  may  be  me  but  looking  thro  the  pages  of  NOV RM  ( presume  this  means  Railway Modeller)  I can  find  no reference  to  FEN END PIT, unless  the  name  refers  to something  within an  article  which has  a  different  title?

Back in 1984  I found  a picture  of  one of my  locos  adorning  the  frontcover of  an  annual   related  to  a magazine  longsince  discontinued,  iiwas  never  asked if  I  approved of  that!!  ( But   I was  quite  pleased  to  see it!!)

Further  perusal  of  the  said  magazine  has  answered  my question  Page 859   the  2nd  page  of  a  2   page  article  'Plan  of the Month',  "An  ironstone Line"

One  photo featuring  a  dragline excavator and loco+ v Skips,   Caption  notes  layout  1:32 built  by  David  Barham for  his 'Fen End'  sandpit  layout.

There's a single photograph in the bottom corner of page 859 showing a Ruston Bucyrus dragline with a loading hopper and a n.g. train to the rear. It's a two page article on modelling ironstone lines. The photograph is described as of 'David Barham's Fen End sand pit' layout.

No photographer is credited.

Edit, Steve added the above info to his post as I was posting.

I'm constantly amazed at the differences between UK and USA attitudes about things like this.  Over here, if the photo was taken at a public exhibition there's no expectation of privacy of or control by the subject.

I agree it would have been nice to ask before publishing, though!

I just checked my copy and you are credited

"... was built by David Barham ....... for his Fen End layout .....

Its a picture of your Ruston Bucyrus dragline excavator, on page 859

Well that is good to know, Still a quick email telling me it was going to be in the magazine would still have been nice.

I tend to agree, I'm involved with a club layout that has been used a few times for exhibition posters without even an acknowledgement, some were even our own photos from a previous article. Okay one could say they paid for the article so could use the photos anyhow they wish but to be asked would be nice.

On my own products I've just been told by the author that an article using our bufferstops is due in one of the magazines over Christmas, I did supply the items initially when permission was sought and it would be good advertising anyway.
