MarcD
Following a conversation at the Workington Model Railway show in 2012 about my 7mm shunting layout "Ultramarine Works". The idea was put around how small could you build a 7mm shunting layout. The result was Crackpot Mining built inside an IKEA APA toy box using PECO 009 track. The original idea was to build all the track in 0-14 but due to time constraints I ended up building it in 0-9. It is the first time I have built rock formations and used static grass. The background story to crackpot mining is a mixture of fact and fiction. Most of the villages in Swaledale in North Yorkshire have lead mines dating back to roman times. The village of Crackpot had two mines. With imports of lead being cheaper that locally mined ore the mines were all closed by 1905. Now for the fiction Following shortages of metal ore in 1940 the mines were reopened to help the war effort. However the war is now over and the mine is now falling onto hard times as the imports of metals is now flowing again.
