Hi everyone. I am just starting out on a 20ft x 14ft dcc layout. The layout is planned with four main lines in ovals, withe a terminal station, MPD and fiddle yard. I estimate about 48 turnouts in total. Being new to dcc and finding massive conflicting advise my question is am I better to have a separate accessory bus. Thanks

Hi do you know how you are going to wire your layout for DCC, i would urge you to look at www.Brian Lamberts website first to get his take on it.It goes through everything you would want to know.Let me know what you think.Might also be a good thing if you could join a club if you have a local 1

Hi

Yes otherwise a short on the layout will prevent you changing the points and correcting said short if caused by a loco running against an incorrectly set one.

Cheers

For this to work you need to either run the accessory bus off a separate DCC booster, or, if both buses are fed by a single booster, have a circuit breaker on the main track bus that the accessory bus bypasses.  In this way the short on the track bus will not trip the booster and leave the accessory bus live. It's most unlikely you'll get a short on the accessory bus if it's just controlling turnout accessory decoders.

On my layout I use a Lenz LZV100 booster, with a PSX circuit breaker.  Works fine for me and is essential, as most track shorts are operator error!

You also need to ensure that whatever circuit breaker you use trips faster than the DCC command station.
