Eddington Yard

Hi

It has been a while since i have put a layout of my own on here since i finished Millwood and Werrington Road both moved on.

I thought it was about time i started a new layout for myself and i found a small window to build a small micro layout that will hopefully be the flagship layout to take to shows under the Little Layout banner.

The layout is based on a small distribuition yard taking freight from various places, this is a fictitious scene and most stock wil be seen going into the yard.

Tha main stock will be a couple of 25s, an 08 and a RF 37 bringing in various stock like VDAs and box style wagons and a bit of OCA activity.

There is also a small siding to hold a loco awaiting its trip out of the yard.

I have recently brouight 2 great looking buildings from a chap on Facebook called Robert sanderson and could not resist basing ther layout around these 2 great buildings.

I also wanted to tryout a double slip i had knocking about just out of curiosty to see how it would work in a Micro layout situation.

The main scenic board is 3.8ft x 13" which will have a 2.6 ft fiddle yard attached, part of the fiddle yard will act as a headshunt into the stabling siding.

The layout will DCC with seep motors, lots of clutter and overgrown areas.

Ok less of the chat here are a few pics of progress so far, main board built just awaiting its back panels and the main scenic board is fully wired and awaiting point motors.

Hi,

Looks like a good stop. The trackplan is excellent and looks like it has a lot of operational potential, a bit different to the norm for these type of small shunting layouts.

Have you had any thoughts on the nature of the fiddle yard because that will be key to operation given the plan?

Will be following with interest because it is just my type of layout!

Thanks,

David

Hi David

Thanks for the great comments.

The fiddle yard will either be track based like in the plan or i may use cassettes as this will make swapping the trains around easierand enable turning the stock quicker, i used them on Werrington road to great effect.

The scenic break will be the smaller shed but will have a cut out at the rear so i can run stock through it to give the impression of a larger facillity and also allow me to add loads to OCA style stock so i run in empties and pull out loaded wagons.

The double slip adds a little more operating potential i think

Looking good

Looks a great little layout, nice buildings and blue diesels, can't go wrong!

Looking forward to more :)

Cheers, Paul

Looking very promising.

Looks great already.

Love those buildings, just what I need for my yard.

Thank you all for the kind comments.

The buildings are superb and are very well made, i cant take credit for them as they were made by a friend of mine and i couldnt resist them when he sent me the photos.

I will fit some lighting into the main loading building, i have initially done this with some LEDs that i picked up from Poundland but they are not that great so i will go back to the tried and tested grain of wheets, i prefer the yellow light they give to as this gives a nice look to the buildings.

I will be building my own yard lights with the LEDs which will give a little different lioght colour to the layout.

Tha plan is to get the fiddle yard board builot up tonight and some ballast down on the track upto the slip and the points.

I can then hopefully get the point motors fitted over the weekend and the back boards on the scenic section with the backscene in place fitted.

I did a test run last night on the scenic board and everything seemed to run well over the double slip, except when i set the wrong roads, that is going to take some getting use too :)

More progress pictures tonight.

Lovely work Neil, those buildings are quality. I always enjoy seeing your projects.

Love the 25s!

Thanks Alex

I have a thing for 25s at the moment, no idea why, and they run very nicely indeed.

I think im going to part with my inter 47 and get a nice blue or RF 20 next

Looking good Neil!

Those buildings do look very good and fit in well with what you have planned!

The 25's do run well - I have 4 myself! They also fit in well with a small layout. Some of the larger classes can look a little too large.

You didn't fancy building your own track then?

Im really pleased with the buildings, Robert has done a great job.

I have a RF 37 that just fits nicely but thats as big as it will get, like you say the 25s fit nicely on a small layout hence the sale of the inter 47.

I did consider building my own track but 2 reasons why i didnt, 1- was that i was itching to see how this double slip i had would work on a Little layout so that i could use it on any fiuture customer builds and 2 -was because i wanted something of my own build to take to the Mansfield show in March 2015, i felt that taking Barton and running it under the Little layouts banner wasnt true as i havent built it, i brought it and just tidyed it up and added a few details and i didnt want to take credit for that as a Little Layout build.

The Buildings i had from Robert pretty much made my mind up and my head was full of ideas for them so i thought just do it.

To be honest i havent built a layout for myself since i did Werrington Road and i was itching to do something.

I have kept it small as the window to build is fairly tight as i have other layouts booked in early next year so i wanted to give myself a fighting chance of getting it looking good.

Good Morning All

Little more progress last night.

I got the fiddle board cut and fitted to the main board, i did run out of batons for the sides but they will go on tonight to ensure its all secure and a list has been made for the backscene and fiddle yard surrounds which will be cut by the weekend.

All the fiddle yard is wired except the rear siding as i am waiting for the point to link through to arrive.

Everything ran really nicely through the double slip first time round which i am really pleased with.

Next is the point motors, i may even try a servo motor instead of Seeps as i have a few bits that i can use to make it up.

I also fitted the lights to the outside of the main building and replaced the LEDs for the grain of wheat and they look much better.

This is moving along very nicely :)

Hello Neil,

Just popped in to see what you are up to, Wow ...really like the new layout and the backscene is really good, whos is it ?

George

Hey George, always a pleasure to have you pop in.

Thanks for the kind comments.

The backscene really does look good, its an ID backscenes one, i think its called distant town or something like that.

Its the first time i have used a 15" high back scene, i does give it some great depth.

I luckily had a 5ft section left over from a previous layout and it fits perfectly.

It gives a bit of colour and greenery to the industrial look of the layout and the buildings i think.

I am going to have to pick up a sky pack for the exit backscene which should blend in nicely as the far left corner will have a fairly high low relief building so the join between the two wont be noticable.

A little more progress last night.

The initital pre ballast weathering of the track has been done, well until the airbrush decided to play up but most of it has been lightly weathered.

I have also made a start on the old mud road way that will run from the rear of the layout down and across the front.

I have done this with just normal quick dry filler and left it fairly rough so that i can sand any high or heavy areas.

Once dry i will give it some mixs of paint to get a nice mud and dirt look.

This was something i had considered to do with DAS clay as i have seen it a few times on various threads but decided to give it a go this way instead.

I have left the Backscene off for now as i always seem to get paint or something all over it through the scenic process.

What do you think??

More progress last night.

Mixture of colours and gravel to start building up the old mud track across the right side and over the rails down to the works shed.

It still needs a bit more blending in to get it looking right.

Also started the small hardstanding inside the little shed and a bit of grass work on the corner mainly because i was bored waiting for things to dry out :)

I made 2 cowlings for the large shed as the lights were glaring out so i chopped in half a cap that is for a yard lamp and filed it a little, this worked perfect as there white metal. i will post some pics as i do the lights on the little shed to show how it was done.

Pictures time.

Hello Neil,

Just a thought on fiddle yards, l would go for cassettes every time they are far better than on board fiddles by far, and going by the number of layouts you build, you could make them standard to fit ALL the layouts you build, just a thought...have a look at 'Ashcombe'

George
