RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted November 27, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 27, 2014 Knowing the shops nearer to myself Dave I suspect they would prefer to see the product (in the flesh, so to speak, ideally or at least good quality images of a painted sample) and have some idea of pricing and international business arrangements. I'll have a chat to a few people I know .....
RMweb Gold farren Posted November 27, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2014 hi Dave, I don't know how costly this would be or even if it is possible but have you thought of putting them bar-code things on the boxes the ones you scan with a mobile phone and it then brings up information. i know it may be a bit gimmicky but the youngsters like thing like that and it could be useful by hold information such loco history and model details such as spare parts numbers etc. just a idea as i side
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted November 27, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 27, 2014 them bar-code things on the boxes the ones you scan with a mobile phone and it then brings up information QR codes. IMO a great idea. Doesn't take to much at the back end and looks modern and "with it".
34theletterbetweenB&D
Just wondering - are traction tyres out of fashion in the UK now? I've got a mixture of Japanese, German and British N-gauge motive power units on my layout, and the British ones (GraFar/Dapol) are the only ones without traction tyres. And funnily enough also the only ones which are prone to slipping on gradients ... It's fine for N gauge if that's what the majority of purchasers want, but I won't buy an OO loco with traction tyres. Well, almost. If a manufacturer felt a traction tyre was necessary on an OO model, but also supplied the metal tyre substitute wheelset in the box, that would be OK. Then there's the type of traction tyre. What OO has been fitted with is a horror. Dirt attractant, soft and stretchy with short life, and coloured and thus very visible. There are good materials for the purpose, and I would particularly point at the Rivarossi tyre on their HO product of years gone by: translucent so not that visible, long life, not unduly dirty. A decent quality product.

jsp3970
Hi Dave and Rick, I'd love to sell my loco's to stockists in Europe and Australia and the USA, but no one has approached me, despite sending out invitations to everyone i could find. Mind you, I sent out 400 invitations and application packs to UK stockists and only got 40 replies. This is a shame, but possibly they dont want to deal with me, or are waiting until something tangible pops up. Having said that i was expecting a flush of trade application forms back after i unveiled the J94 EP models but got none. lol It seems that not only do some stockists not have enough stock in this year, they dont want to have mine either! I hope they all come forth soon, as i'm only making to pre-orders, so if they miss out then they miss out completely on the first run. Mind you, the old saying is very apt here........ you can take a horse to water......etc Cheers Dave Reading this I remember the quote from the movie 'Field of Dreams'. "if you build it they will come".

gardenwall
Dave I note you intend to put a 3/4 cad/cam of the loco which is contained within on the box. I trust you have given some thought to readily identifying the livery/number too, as already you are proposing multiple options in that regard, and no doubt that will duly multiply further down the line. Also will the boxes be tailored to size or be a small range of standard sizes to facilitate stacking? This may not be too significnt for you or retailers if produced to order, but for those of us who may eventually end up with a number of your products it would make life easier to have them stack neatly (even if empty because the stock is in use) particularly in 7mm. Hi mate, Thanks for the mail. I'll be using 2/3 sizes of box ( hopefully 2) to give some conformity in the 'look' . As for the identifying the contents, I have a few ideas regarding that, apart from the usual end label, which the box will need to have as a matter of course. However to keep a few steps ahead of the competition I'll not be telling what they are now. Cheers Dave

Stevelewis
BR Maroon - is that a nod back to the GMR/Mainline days of the 80s - the last time we had someone come in and upturn the applecart. And Airfix as well, and what a revolution was started then UK outline railway modelling equipment went from mediocre but just acceptable.... to rather good!! RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted November 29, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 29, 2014 Now we can collect holographic boxes. Do you think they would sell for more if the original contents are still inside.

JSpencer
As long as the box gets the loco to my safely and does not eat up lots of storage space, then that is fine for me. I find the current Bachmann, Hornby and Heljan formats good in these respects, while the former Heljan and Dapol diesel boxes where way too big. (The current cardboard outer of Bachmann can be flattened leave you store the loco in the smaller plastic inner)

PreservationModeller
Just seen this thread and the choice of inlay; foam is ideal In my opinion. The only thing I'd ask is that if details need fitting, like vac pipes, there is space for these in the foam. Kernow's BWT suffer this and I'll have to cut space to allow the pipes to stay on the models.
