I have started a petition after some pretty horrid runs up the A1 lately

I'm sorry if I'm offending any lorry drivers on here but it may make the industry see sense and all set speed limiters to the same speed instead of using it to penny pinch! Also may to railfreight some good.

Now posted actual link! Sorry

Anyway please sign and pass onhttp://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/72688

So because a lorry wants to overtake another lorry you feel the need to start a petition to ban it!

Maybe I should start a petition to limit all vehicles to 50mph on a dual carriageway, no conflict then!

Easy answer is leave earlier and drive to the prevalent traffic conditions instead of leaving it to the last minute and then caning it, 70mph is a limit not a target.

Well 15- 20 years ago the same journey in the same type of vehicle would take 3.5 hours now it takes 5 hours even with road improvements and that because the road haulage lot have fitted speed limiters. If they want to save money well keep off dual carrigeways, fine. but why should you or me have to spend more time driving just so they can undercut railfreight. I take it from your profile you're a driver? Well think of freight drivers!

Russ ,

This was done as an experiment on a stretch of the M42 between 7 am and 7pm ( now adopted ) .

When I travel on this stretch ( in my lorry ) during these times it is usually one of two things that are holding up lane 1 - a slow car or a supermarket distribution truck doing 50 mph .

It is very common on the continent to have ' no truck overtaking ' areas .

If all trucks were to drive at their limited speed ( when road conditions are suitable ) I think it would save a lot of overtaking and holding you and me up .

The rail freight side of things is for another discussion .

Regards

Mike b

Ps I won't be joining you in signing your petition I am afraid .

If you think the A1 is bad try the A9 where the average speed cameras really put the brakes on everything. The best one is as soon as you hit a dual carriageway lorries now sit in both lanes one at 49mph the other one at 50 normally all the way to the single carriageway resuming.

A quote from a truck driver the day they started the speed cameras and the raised truck speed limit by 10 mph on the single carriageway bits amused me :

" it now takes 15 minutes longer to do the journey "

You can work that one out yourselves .

Lorries are limited to 56mph on dual carriageways and motorways because of a stupid law enforced on us by Brussels. The moment we can leave Europe and start to take control of our own laws again, we may be able to resolve the sort of troubles you're petitioning about. The problem we'll have then is finding politicians with the b4lls to tackle the problem, and when you look at the career politicians we currently have in power, I won't be holding my breath!

Phil

PS - I was told by the transport manager of a very large national fleet of lorries that when the 56mph limit was introduced, his accident rates climbed through the roof because on motorways his drivers would stick the pedal to the floor, then start to lose concentration and have accident. And this stupid law was introduced to supposedly cut the number of accidents involving lorries.

One thing that I do agree with is that the A1 is a horrible road these days.  You seem to be in the nearside lane held to 30mph, or in the outside lane holding up the guy behind who wants to do 90mph.

The long and short of the problem is that there is too much traffic on the roads.  Leaving Europe won't solve that problem (whatever Mr. Farage says) - it will just isolate the UK.

However, that's enough - this is straying too close to politics!
