I joined in a discussion about models of the large boiler Hughes 0-8-0.

I now find myself interested in building a model of of this prototype.

Where did they work in LMS days?

Were they confined to the Lancashire side of the Pennines, or did they work over the Pennines from the Yorkshire coalfields?

I've had a browse through 'Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway LOCOMOTIVES' by Barry C Lane (2010, Pendragon, ISBN 978 1 8998 16 17 0), who states that "They were allocated virtually everywhere." It contains a few photos in Yorkshire: an unidentified non-superheated one in the Calder Valley;1395 after running through the stop block at Mirfield; 201 at Horbury. He mentions that they were regularly used from Wigan over Shap to Carlisle, and intriguingly Nos. 698 and 715 early in 1918 worked from Pontypool Road (GWR) shed, where they were warmly welcomed by their crews!

They were indeed used throughout the LYR from coast to coast. They occasionally did work off the LYR system, one was outstationed in Hull on a daily basis and there was also a lodging working off Wakefield shed that went down to Mansfield via the South Yorkshire Joint railway, Shireoakes and Whitwell. It was a LYR loco every other day and it is believed these big 0-8-0's worked it together with 4Fs and LMS standard 0-8-0s.
