Caledonian Railway RODs

Caledonian

Recommended Posts

Approximately 50 RODs were loaned to the Caledonian Railway between 1919 and 1921.

Photos show cast plates on the cab carrying a Caledonian number which unusually was a four figure one starting either 20.. or 21..  The tender side bore the letters C . R and I suspect the number was also painted on the rear of the tender in the usual Caledonian practice although it doesn't appear to have been painted on the front buffer beam. Otherwise the livery appears to be unlined black.

Does anyone have a list of the numbers allocated by the Caley to these locomotives. I'm particularly interested in identifying one illustrated in Nock's book on the Caley. The number begins 21 and includes either an 8 or a 9

According to JWP Rowledge “Heavy Goods Engines of the War Department” Vol 3 (Springmead Railway Books 1977), the Caledonian took 50 ROD’s on loan from Sept-Dec 1919 (plus one in March 1920), until they were returned to Government control and stored at Greta from Aug 1921.

16 of the locos were ‘used’ – ROD Nos 1615, 1701-3/5/10-2.1808/12/6/7/24/34/46, the remaining 34 locos were all new - ROD Nos 1745 (RSH), 2077-84/6/7 (NBL Hyde Park), 2125-37 (NBL Queens Park) and 2158-67 (NBL (Atlas)

The GWR and LNWR renumbered the loaned ROD locos to avoid confusion with their existing stock, but other railways, including the Caledonian retained the ROD numbers while the locos were on loan.

It could be that the loco you wish to identify is ROD 2128, 2158 or 2159

Splendid! Exactly what I wanted to know, thank you.

Having now examined the photo again with a magnifying glass and those numbers to hand I can say with some confidence that the loco in question, presumably a Perth allocated one as it was up at Aberdeen, was in fact 2161.
