RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted December 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2014 I was 'pleased' to receive a spam text message from a localish PC retailer, advising of their 3 day sale starting on Boxing Day. Problem was, it was received at 02:36 on Christmas Day. Ideas for revenge please! I should clarify, that I'm not going to get them back, just expressing my disgust at them waking me up at that hour. To my knowledge, I've never purchased from them before, and you can guess how likely I'm going to now!!

DDolfelin
If you turn your 'phone off you are likely to miss important messages which could save a fortune. Especially if you need a new sofa.
RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted December 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2014 D*mn. I need a new sofa too... Seriously though, if the phone is turned off, any text messages should be held by the provider for delivery when the phone is swtiched on again, so they shouldn't get missed. TonyA
It may not be the retailer. You need to check the time it was sent. I received three messages at 02:30 on Christmas Eve that had been sent at normal times over the previous two days. That seems to be the time that service providers clear their backlog. Giles
I get so much rubbish - in particular emailed to me - that I'm now being brutal about un subscribing from any lists that bombard me at inappropriate times - and I started on Christmas Day. I'm afraid that included BRM/RM publicity emails on Christmas Day...... I don't regard my email 'in-tray' as a 24hour junk mail delivery system for every commercial organisation to use and abuse at their whim, and have me respond every time my phone goes 'ping'..... Sorry, I don't mind occasional sensible mail shots at sensible times - but it's my phone and computer and me at the receiving end, and that's that. Tony But the text message doesn't say what time it was sent. Besides the whole thing is their problem, if they pay el cheapo rates, why should it become my problem to deal with? RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted December 26, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2014 I turn my mobile phone off overnight to prevent this very problem. I leave my mobile on overnight to use as an alarm clock and sadly as a clock for when & if I wake up during the night. I don't normally get text messages at night. I hope this isn't the start. I never really see what the problem is here, I just delete without opening if I'm not interested. I tried to unsubscribe to various but as soon as I purchased again they restarted (amazon ebay etc). With some I just marked as spam a couple of times and then they went straight to spam folder when delivered (NTL/Virgin uses Googlemail) and I just check that every few days for some that might of slipped through. I don't get texts so not been a problem. . . . . . . so far.
Giles
The problem is that I don't really want to label BRM and similar as 'spam' - I would be quite happy to receive occasional updates at appropriate times - but too many commercial organisations just can't help themselves, and just keep sending stuff almost for the sake of it, or do not consider when it is being sent (or when it might arrive). Thus it DOES leave you with a choose of making it spam or accepting it, which is a shame. If my search engine learns that it is junk, I will never ever see it.... I should far rather see such companies exercise some self-restraint in their own interests.....
Guest
I'm one of those folk that turn their mobile off before bed, but if you like to keep it on (perfectly understandable), turn the text alert sound "off" or down to a volume of "1" or "0". RMweb Premium John M Upton Posted December 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2014 I keep getting threatening texts from E-On saying pay up now for the energy you've used or we send the boys round. Never had an account with them in my life and most definitely not responding on the number given or going to the stated website to find out what's going on... Guest
Phone numbers get recycled so I get debt collectors and texts from British Gas asking to reply with a meter reading. If I replied with all nines I bet the actual account holder would query that bill and update their details Debt collectors are persistent. I had one asking for Mrs so & so and when I replied it was a wrong number they asked if they could leave a message....

Problem with that is that some people seem to think that un-subscribes don't apply to them. Custom gets lost that way. Adrian

My service provider allows me to block all these numbers, so I don't get bothered by them. Works quite well......
