Blackstoat
Hi I'm rapidly reaching the point where I'm going to start throwing some paint at a model. I'd like to try my hand at lining - I have an old bow pen and an easi-liner to experiment with. Should be fun. from what I've read it seems the preferred base for lining is gloss? I've looked at the Precision Paints range and it looks as though the size I want (15ml) is only available in "dull". Is dull another name for satin as I note they also offer a matt option. And how is "dull" for lining on to - and most importantly, cleaning up my inevitable mistakes. Open to suggestions thanks for your help Andy
RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted January 1, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2015 Some modellers use Klear to provide a gloss covering to the area before applying lining. My preference is to use Micro Gloss. Either way, once the lining's applied you can then cover with another thin coat to protect the lining. Then you can go on to add satin or matt finishes and weathering if desired.
Blackstoat
Thanks for the reply. This is all sounding very familiar. I used Klear regularly over matt acrylic on my military models to provide a workable layer for enamel and oil tone shifts and weathering. I'm thinking if I'm going to apply a gloss I may as well spray it with acrylic. After all acrylic is a much easier cleanup. Just seemed to me that the references I've read (Rathbone etc) seemed to advocate gloss enamel and nothing else. Obviously I'll line in gloss enamel, but it seemed the base layer should also be gloss enamel as the slow drying time allows time for the paint to settle perfectly flat? have I got this right? Thanks Andy
RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted January 1, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2015 Afraid I'm nearly all acrylic but sounds ok to me.
Blackstoat
Ah! I thought going acrylic would make things easier. Where do I get a colour match for turn of the century GWR loco and coach colours??? I'm thinking Indian reds etc I know others must have been here numerous times before, so a nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.
