Blog- Maurice's Blog - Quality Control

Recommended Posts

After several years of not having used my riveting tool ... and several days of beating around the bush before getting on with the unavoidable job of riveting a Beyer Pecock tender for my Ilfracombe Goods... I start the new year with an old lesson.

If it is not good enough ... it's not good enough!

The only thing to do, is make it again and this time leave enough material on the piece to hold it in the riveter. (The picture shows the good one reduced to finished size.)

With the sides already cut to size, I will do them by hand... i.e. holding them in the riveter 'free hand' rather than clamping them in place.

Once it is done properly it looks OK!!

It is especially important to get the line of rivets straight as the livery includes lining in close proximity that will emphasis every misplaced rivet head.

I mark the rivets out with a fine pencil on a sticky paper label attached to the nickel-silver. Much easier to see then trying to mark out on the metal.
