westerner
I've always used Modelmasters for steam and Shawplan for diesels.
micklner
Fox very expensive. Modelmaster and 247 Developments are much more reasonable and just at good.

martin_l_jones
Agree with the Shawplan recommendation for D&E, however they don't sell everything and I have used Fox as well, I have found some Fox nameplates are very thin and bow, especially the longer one's.. RMweb Premium Bernard Lamb Posted January 2, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2015 Fox very expensive. Modelmaster and 247 Developments are much more reasonable and just at good. The thread title does refer to best quality. On that basis it has to be Fox. If you are fussy about correct works plates rather than generic it again has to be fox. Almost as good but not "just as good". You pays your money..... Bernard

RMweb Premium Hilux5972 Posted January 3, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2015 I always go with Fox. Unless it is custom ones. Then I go with Narrow Planet.

Retro_man
Modelmaster is my first choice for etched nameplates. I also use some of their transfers so can usually get the names and numbers, etc. together. If they don't have what I want I will use Fox, but they cost a bit more and their transfers are a lot more expensive. For nameplates with painted crests - e,g, A4 60024 Kingfisher Fox are better. I also use Narrow Planet for custom plates.

MartinWales
247 Developments every time! Gary attend less shows these days but his range has increased, and having need for some 3mm scale nameplates recently they were done within a reasonable timescale and at a very reasonable cost! Focalplane
Fox seem to offer the best service as well as a good product. I have been put off by some suppliers for their "attitude". Fox simply deliver.
70021 Morning Star
CAUTION - MODELMASTER UNFULFILLED ORDERS FROM NOV/DEC 2014 !! I'd agree that ModelMaster etched locomotive nameplates are the best, BUT, he's not delivered my last two orders (paid via the website) and they were ordered at the end of November, and beginning of December, 2014. Previous orders came through, no problem, and his Craftsmanship is superb. I've given up phoning to chase the orders. He did say he was having difficulties, having [over]committed to a very large corporate order, but I'm finding his customer service extremely unsatisfactory (and I'm being polite about what someone referred to as the "attitude" of this supplier). UPDATE 19/01/2015 - The ModelMaster has refunded my payments. No apology offered, and 'attitude' problem remains. He claims my order was (eventually) dispatched on 22nd December, and has gone missing in the post. Strangely, my other suppliers had no problems, and Royal Mail has an otherwise 100% next-day delivery record to this address. Form your own opinion. ...as they say, it's not what a supplier does when things go well, it's how they go about putting things right when something goes wrong, that is the true measure of a company. Enough said. Rick

Previous orders came through, no problem, and his Craftsmanship is superb. I've given up phoning to chase the orders. He did say he was having difficulties, having [over]committed [?] to a very large corporate order, but I'm finding his customer service extremely unsatisfactory (and I'm being polite about what someone referred to as the "attitude" of this supplier). Not certain, but I seem to recall you can buy his excellent etched nameplates through another retailer; thereby sidestepping his order-processing problems. Does anyone know who this might be? Otherwise, I'd give Fox Transfers a very high recommendation, and I've heard good things about other suppliers recommended on this thread. What would be really useful is to see some pictures of the nameplates, for comparison. I'll update this post (probably this evening) with a couple of photographs of the 4mm scale 9F "Evening Star" nameplates from ModelMaster and from Fox Transfers. Rick At the beginning of December I phoned Modelmasters about the possibility of obtaining some transfers he no longer lists. While he said immediately he had one of the sheets I wanted he didn't think he had the other, but he asked me to phone back a couple of days later to give him time to check in case he did have a sheet in stock [he didn't]. He was extremely helpful and the sheet I did order arrived a couple of days later. I've used Modelmasters for years and never had trouble with delivery [or his attitude]. If I do have one critisism it is that he doesn't answer emails. (If anyones looking for the sheets containing names for NB 'Scotts', Glens, J36s one of them is available, but not listed on their website.) 70021 Morning Star
Well, Jeremy, I was surprised too. As I said, I've only the greatest respect for his Craftsmanship, and I've had no problems in the past. Hopefully, normal service will resume shortly. In the meanwhile, I'm significantly out of pocket... I'm fully in favour of supporting any skilled modelmakers - we need them - and don't, necessarily, expect them to have good business skills; that's not their forte. Which is why I'm interested in finding a way to support him, and his business, by purchasing through a third-party vendor. Rick
