Twright
Hello Would a 16xx pannier in late crest black have it's safety valve cover painted black or left as bare brass if in the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire region. My Bachmann 8750 pannier has it painted black but as its a different class I thought I best check. Thanks
br2975
Try this . Can't make out the crest, but it's 1964 and the safety valve cover is, well, dark. http://www.miac.org.uk/hillevans.html . Brian R
Twright
Thanks, I think I'd conclude that it would be black as the top picture appears to show it the same shade as the tanks http://www.miac.org.uk/mickrock2.html
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 3, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2015 As most photos show filthy well dirty engines it really is near impossible to tell from a b&w picture - just look at some in that other link where the engines definitely have natural brass safety valve bonnets but they are no different in colour from the muck on the rest of the engine. In my view the only way to get an accurate answer is in ex-works colour pictures.
Twright
This is the closet I've found and I would say it's black (I know it's the wrong crest, but I don't think that would have changed anything unless I'm wrong) http://www.rail-online.co.uk/p254678474/h32fe9ff3#h2be4bd64
RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted January 3, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 3, 2015 Polishing the covers on pannier tanks seems to be a preservation thing. In BR days I think that anything without a copper top was likely to have a painted cover underneath the muck.
Twright
Black it is then
RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted January 3, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2015 I'm not at all sure that all these safety valve covers were actually brass, they could have been cast iron. Certainly a lot of them were painted black in BR days.

Certainly a lot of them were painted black in BR days. They were brass - and manufactured in the Coppersmith's Shop at Swindon (I think some of the formers might still exist at Steam?). Incidentally Caerphilly definitely outshopped small tank engines in black livery with polished safety valve covers in the late 1950s/early '60s (including the seemingly much travelled 9710, the condensing tank that got away). br2975
May be worth getting hold of "British Railways Illustrated" Vol.4 No.10 July 1995. . Pgs 517 - 529 therein contain an articel entitled "Small is beautiful" and gives allocations, shopping dates and withdrawl date for each individual 16XX, together with a large number (30) of photos. . Not one of the locos, in either crest (in fact only 1638 & 1654 can be positively identified as carrying the later BR crest) , has a polished safety valve cover. . Brian R Thanks for that, I will look out for it. It would make it easier to keep it black so I think I'll do that.
