Help with signalling on my small N-Gauge layout

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Been an N-Gauger for a little while now but not needed to ask too many questions so far (search has been a great tool) however, I'm trying to figure out signalling and I'm pretty baffled having read the signalling websites.  Any advice would be most appreciated as I'm keen to place an order to keep things moving.

Scenario is this: "coffee table sized" twin loop "tailchaser" with a small TMD in the middle.  I have one fuel siding (accessed from the outer loop and crosses the inner loop) and the access to the TMD is via the inner loop.  There are 3 sidings in the TMD -points operated by hand levers so no signals.  This is in no way prototypical but gives me something nice to watch trains running round on!!!

How do I signal this one please using colour lights suitable circa 80's-90's period?

I have shown a 4 aspect signal in the normal direction of the inner line.  I have a Heathcote board for this.  This would be set to red as soon as either set of points for the sidings switch off the main lines.  If I fit the IR sensor at point X then it will sequence through and show a bit of colour on the front of the layout where it would be seen.  I have the signal and the sequencer for this to add a bit of automatic colour action on the layout as trains pass.

I have shown a double two-aspect signal at the entrance to the sidings, each with a feather off to the right for the sidings.  I may have made a mistake with this as I already bought it but it may not be correct.  These would work off two switches which would change to red and light the feather s for each line (would also set the 4 aspect signal to red also).

I wasn't sure what other signalling would be required for trains potentially running the wrong line.  Would a ground signal be required for the outer loop as shown bottom left?  If so this would change to red using the same switch as the outer loop is switched to the fuel siding.  I showed another two ground signals at the entrance to the main line from each sidings.  NB:  As these face the back of the layout, then they'd just be dummys as the lights wouldn't be seen.

....Appreciate this set-up isn't prototypical but is it OK in theory?  Or would it just be totally infeasible?  Have attached a few images of my WIP to help explain.  I'm going to use CR signals for this (already have a few) as I'm impressed with the quality.
