Some more photos from Southern California.

Recommended Posts

Heres a few more from my December visit.  The only freight I saw at Enginitas on the line between Ocean Side and San Diego,  though I did hear several at night.

Then some  from the Coaster on the trip I took into LA & at LA Union Station.

Most of the freight on the Surf Line (BNSF) runs at night. Autoracks are dominant - the port of National City (just south of San Diego) is a major importing point for cars from Asia, and there's a lot of auto traffic in from GM & VW plants in Mexico too. Often see tank traffic too, unsure of the contents. Boxcars, gondolas and flats are rarer. Don't think I've ever seen any intermodal traffic.

Daytime sees a pretty intensive passenger service - Amtrak (San Luis Obispo - LA - San Diego), Coaster (San Diego - Oceanside) and Metrolink (LA - Oceanside).
