Late already so no time to phot it, but Google is my friend. The black and white house appears pre-date the railway, and it has had a slice taken off the corner to achieve clearance. Not only that, but to preserve the roof structure the good old Worcester & Hereford railway corbelled the brickwork out over the top of the structure gauge. It appears to be indifferently maintained, possibly derelict. I might go back to take a closer look.

Adrian Wintle
There is one a bit like that in Toronto, but in that case it seems to be that the existing house was replaced with a larger one that was built out to the property limits. https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll=43.643694,-79.431678&spn=0.001609,0.002401&t=h&z=19 Adrian
bike2steam
It must have been interesting living there in the old days when plenty of freight went that way, helped by a banker ( usually a 42/52 2-8-0T) from Ledbury.
Adrian Wintle
Friends of mine used to live here: https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll=44.242906,-76.606755&spn=0.000008,0.004801&t=m&z=18&layer=c&cbll=44.242906,-76.606755&panoid=Cjjp6PVqzlIzG-_pX9tJGw&cbp=12,268.26,,1,1.09 That is the CN main line between Toronto and Montreal behind the fence. When they lived there what is now the driveway was an extension of the street over a level crossing (complete with lights, bells, and AHBs) and their driveway was down the far (rail) side of the house. You turned in just before the AHB. It was not the quietest house. Adrian
brianusa
There must be hundreds of houses near railway lines that wouldn't stand a chance of being built today; in most cases they were there before the railway. A classic example is by the famous crossing on the Wenford branch. Brian.

RMweb Premium petethemole Posted January 20, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20, 2015 It's now listed; here's the record: http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-151488-bridge-cottage-colwall- As listing didn't exist in 1860 someone must have prevailed upon the railway engineers not to demolish it, the landowner perhaps? shortliner
I know it well - many years ago, in the halcyon years of sproghood, I lived here through the wooden gate, about a half mile up the road from the OP, but the amount of building and infill that has taken place you would not believe! https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.080897,-2.357621,3a,75y,125.62h,73.85t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sRaKeHSf58e0pHUP3lGlamg!2e0 Colwall Station, and the railway, is/was at the rear of the Colwall Park Hotel next door - Lockyear Close which runs down the far side was the entrance to the station goods yard and named after the Garage that used to stand on the opposite corner where the modern half-timbered building now stands - I used to do tyre repairs in my summer holidays and Saturdays

I remember being able to read all the instructions and lettering on the side of a passing freight train hauled by a couple of class 121s. It was cheap though. Ian Abel
We often look for hotels with rooms overlooking the railway Yay! "Got one"... Dr Gerbil-Fritters
My favourite hotel room - room 306, Ramada Barstow. Top right window. Tyrn 180 degrees to see the view. Not impressive? Go to map view = four tracks leading into the Brstow Yard. From room 306 you can see the trains heading into the yard all the way out to Daggett - at night you can see the headlights of five or six incoming trains. Multiple meets and overtakes right outside your window....

Ozexpatriate
We often look for hotels with rooms overlooking the railway My favourite hotel room - room 306, Ramada Barstow. Top right window. I did stay here once (Google maps). Looking out the rear windows - straight down is the Union Pacific main line east of Portland. Across the river is the BNSF main line too. The proximity of a multi-locomotive train on the UP line can be felt. The Columbia River Inn advertises that: The hotel overlooks the Bridge of the Gods and the Columbia River. Strangely it doesn't add "and the Union Pacific Railroad".
