Day/Night Lighitng

Hi, I'm trying to modify a Bachmann 170 into a 172 and am going to put lighting in it. For the headlights I want to make it so I can press Function 1 and 2 more lights will come on but they need to be directional (for night running) Is it possible to get an "and gate" so if inputs 1 and 2 have a flow of electricity it outputs electricity? How would I do this?

I've no idea if this will work. but is all this extra circuitry and additional components necessary?

Why not just fit a decoder with sufficient Function Outputs to control all your separate LEDs in the respective direction of travel? Common positive to each LED and a separate FO return (with series resistor) is all you would need. Then, a few CV changes should set up everything you are trying to achieve and more.

Kind regards,

Paul

Hi,

Very simple reason. Hornby Select and its compatibility.

Express models lighting kits describe running full spec day/night/selective reds variations using up to 8 function decoders or 2 x 4 function if desired.

I'm sure even the Select can switch 4 functions on separate decoders. I thought its limit was Functions 0-8 (i.e. 9).

74HC logic will not be able to take the track voltage so you will have to run the lights at 5V using a regulator if going down that path.

It is possible to do very effective class 170 lighting if you make your own function decoders, there is a good example here:-

It should be no harder to make a decoder following the instructions than making logic to add on to another decoder, and will probably take less space. If you make the 8-output version you will have spare outputs to drive 'door open' LEDs to put behind the orange lens that Bachmann provide on the sides.

The 170 has plenty of room, and the DIY decoder gives you the control that you want.
