DCB
I can't see any reason for using set track if you are building a permanent layout, set track is great for the lounge floor. The streamline small 2 ft radius points do a crossover in the same length as set track 18" radius but far less width and the small Y points are much smaller than the set track versions so I would go for streamline every time. Yes I do agree with you but I prefer three way and double slip make more track for stabling and refuelling shed and heavy maintenance
mightbe
Then I don't see the conundrum; Streamline all the way. Hornby and other varieties of set track are most useful on the floor. With Streamline three-ways and slips you can get quite a bit more track into the same area without it looking toy-like (as it would if you'd used set track turnouts). If haven't already bought any track, I would recommend code 75 for the finer appearance. Of course if you'll be running any old stock that might not do (I personally don't know, all my stock is new enough not to have those large flanges). I believe David was simply comparing the two types based on how wide the gap is vs. how long a crossover is. Set track gives you very short crossovers (or any other two-turnout combination really) but with an extremely large gap between tracks (2.5" if I recall), while Streamline is slightly longer with a 2" gap. If you're using medium points or long points the gap is the same. Again, if you haven't bought any track, I wouldn't recommend using anything smaller than a medium point or the slips. The slips are nominally 36" radius. In actuality they're only 24", but by some grand trick of geometry they don't look silly, unlike the small radius. Large radius looks the best, but the trade-off is space. I assume with a micro layout that large radius points are simply too large. Do you have a track plan or a sketch of what you'd like to do? Perhaps some dimensions as well?
