Hymeks being delivered - through the Peak?

Hi,

When the Hymeks were being delivered, I can't remember now where I'd seen it, but is it right that they worked through the Peak District and to Derby?

regards

I believe this is correct; somewhere, I've seen a published photo of one at Derby. Whether this was a commissioning run, or whether the loco was going forward to Swindon, I'm not sure.

I thought so,

only a friend of mine, (who's Danish) has made a lovely ex Midland Railway layout with a nice MR box etc and bough a hymeck for it,  :scratchhead: is there any other plausible reason for a Hymeck on an ex MR line?

I have a photo of a Hymek on a troop train on the old road at Killamarsh LMR, they also made Rotherham, and Grimsby once on a car train allegedly.

Plus the Lickey bankers of course.

Mike.

Absolutely!

Many workings between Bristol and Worcester for Hymeks - Parcels very common, 2 from Brum to Bristol nightly

How about this one - looks like the scenario the OP describes I think

They worked test runs from Gorton over the Midland Line via Peak Forest to Derby, (then back to Gorton) hauling a rake of empty coaching stock.

For their delivery run to the Western Region (ie Swindon), they travelled via the former Great Central line - often being delivered in pairs, then joining WR metals at Banbury.

They used to regularily work from Bristol Temple Meads to Bath (Green Park) on local workings; there's a photo on P46 of 'Heyday of the Hymeks' of D7024 at Green Park. Taken on 26/10/1965, the loco is at the head of a rake of green SR stock, the first vehicle of which appears to be a Mk 1 BCK.

In a similar vein the North British Warshops were seen working through Carlisle on route from Glasgow to the south.

A Hymeck certainly made it to Crewe with a football special from Bristol to Manchester handing over to a Black 5 at Crewe.

Derby had a test train IT48 going to Corby and back for the testing of the Claytons and Class 25,s so I presume something similar for the Hymeks.

Most, if not all, of the hymeks were delivered down the GC as far as I know. used to be a regular working around lunchtime if I recall. Used to dash to New Basford from school, but could have been later in the afternoon, it's a long time ago :senile:

Usually in pairs, but sometimes one on it's own, then 3 the following week. I saw a good number of them without going near the Western region.

EE type 3s  (class 37) for the WR also came that way. There's a bit of video, shot at Bulwell Common of D6983, the only known cine of that loco which was destroyed less than a year later at Bridgend.

I saw a few Claytons in primer at Nottingham Midland in the 60s.

The NBL D-H Type 2s were also delivered via Carlisle and the WCML to Crewe, thence to the WR.

Yes they were tested on trains via the Peak District. I have a copy of a photo taken by the late Graham Neve from Hazel Grove who took a photo of one on test in the 60s at New Mills South Junction. I can't post the photo here but the loco is in the standard green livery with lime stripe and a small front end yellow panel. It is approaching NMSJ on the Down Fast line hauling a rake of coaches with the reporting number 1T46. I can't quite make the loco number out but pretty sure it ends in 2 so D70x2. I recall Graham telling me that he even saw them in primer on test from Gorton works as well.

This rang a bell.

I've just found out a photo in "the power of Hymeks" by John Vaughan of D7046 in primer at Derby Midland. The caption states that a test run between Gorton and Derby Midland was performed via the old Miller's dale route, 10 up and then returned to Gorton for final livery application and finishing.

The photo is on page 8.

  • 6 months later...

I saw many of the Hymeks at Derby, some fully painted but several in pink primer. Not sure how many coaches the Hymeks took over Peak Forest (eight or ten) but the 25s being built at Derby at the same time were given 12 coaches for their outings over Peak Forest.

I wonder why the Rats were given heavier loads :scratchhead:
