PandrolClip
I wish to put a pullman kitchen first and parlour car in Amongst a rake of Maunsell Coaches emulating a Southampton Boat Train circa pre War. Can anybody advise me which of the plethora of Hornby offerings I should consider as likely candidates Paul
talisman56
For pre-war you would need a K-type Pullman - Hornby's offerings that fit the bill include R4480/85 1st Class Kitchen 'Adrian'/'Minerva' and R4478 1st Class Parlour 'Leona'. EDIT: 'Adrian', being a 'continental Pullman' would not be a candidate for SR workings...
RMweb Gold teaky Posted February 3, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2015 I don't know much about SR operations, but assuming Southampton Boat Train = Ocean Liner Express in 1938 none of the three dedicated sets are modelled by Hornby at present. Sets 1 & 2 were all-steel cars and set 3 included one all-steel car. Perhaps later this year we might see something? There were several supplementary cars but I can only find one that Hornby have modelled in pre-war/pre-1960s guise: Aurelia. (They may also have done Ibis as part of a set but I cannot find enough detail to tell what era that represents.) In case you are considering renaming, the Ocean Liner Express sets in 1938 were: 1 - Evadne, Lucille, Lorraine 2 - Ione, Eunice 3 - Philomel*, Zena, Penelope* * = K-type, rest are all-steel K-type Supplementary cars (K-type) - Adrian, Aurelia, Cassandra, Ibis, Lydia, Octavia, Onyx, Plato, Princess Elizabeth. Hope this helps. The devil is in the detail though when it comes to Pullman cars and more especially when considering what Hornby offer because they have modelled cars from different eras. PandrolClip
Gents many thanks for your help on this, I will follow up with a visit to ebay. One very good practice Hornby SHOULD adopt from Bachmann is that useful legend alongside their models which gives guidance to the era from which the model is derived, would have saved me a lot of money a few years back, particularly with those wagons between BR and Pre-nationalisation Paul
RMweb Gold teaky Posted February 4, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 4, 2015 The era wouldn't help much with Pullmans. For example, for the BR era you could have K-types with matchboarded or plated over or all-steel K-types, original style coat of arms or later (stretched out) style, third class or second class markings or just a number..... I have also just looked at eBay and noticed there are two Aurelias in different styles. So it may be that Hornby did more than one version. The one you need for pre-war has matchboard sides. There are some wild variations in prices! I'd also suggest a hunt around elsewhere online. eBay isn't always the cheapest. I am assuming you are looking for the main range Pullmans rather than the older, now Railroad, ones?
