GreenDiesel
I've recently been given a batch of N scale Atlas track and turnouts, plus a few buildings. So I'm planning to set up a small (22" x 38" or so) N scale loop of track in the middle of my 00 layout. I've posted about this in an earlier thread -- http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/83978-basic-british-n-scale-questions/ So much of what I've learned in 00 does not necessarily apply to N, so I'm wondering if folks here can help prevent me from making any mistakes (by applying 00 logic to N) as well as answer a few questions... -- are Atlas and Peco track compatible? -- are Atlas turnouts OK to use? I gave up on HO Atlas turnouts because I had too many problems with them, so I was thinking of using Peco points -- would they work OK with Atlas track? -- I think HO spikes (for pinning track down) can be used for N, but should I get something thinner? -- anything else that I'm overlooking? If I really get hooked by N, I will probably build a 3x6' layout that is completely N scale. Thanks in advance! Rob
Spitfire2865
Atlas and Peco N scale track is "compatable". Amazing how fine the peco fishplates are compared to Atlas. But if code is similar, you shouldnt have many problems. Atlas N scale turnouts are ok. Depends on how old they are. Newer ones are rather nice. GreenDiesel
Thanks, Spitfire. This is helpful. The Atlas turnouts that I have been given are the motorized kind. I wasn't planning on using the motors, at least not yet. So could I use them without the motors and would they snap into position (as the 00 Peco and Hornby non-motorized ones do)? ... I heard that the motorized Atlas turnouts (when used without the motors) do not lock into one position.
Spitfire2865
No. No US made turnouts that I know of snap to position. Either need a side mounted switch or use switch motors which put pressure on the tiebar. Though it makes it easier fitting tortoise motors.
GreenDiesel
My son & I put together a simple 22x45" layout last night that uses several Atlas turnouts & we were pleased by how well they work. No derailments and they seem to stick in one position OK. So far, so good!
