Norwich to Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth Freight

Chatting to an old boy that lives near the Norwich to Lowestoft line about how much 'train noise' he gets in his house, he said the last the last train of the night was about 2330, and then it was usually quiet until the occasional early morning freight or when network rail were running things. I'm not aware (but admittedly out of touch) of any freight using that route these days. Is there a freight flow or is he likely just confusing something like autoballasters going past?

There is no scheduled freight on any of the lines heading east out of Norwich apart from the daily North Walsham - Harwich gas condensate tanks (Cromer branch).

The only non-passenger traffic will be Network Rail related, Autumn RHTTs, occasional engineering possessions or possibly the odd yellow test train (I know we get 37s with a DBSO on the Felixstowe branch every few weeks but I'm not sure if it does the Norfolk lines, it may just do Felixstowe regularly due to the heavy freight traffic).

However it's about to get a whole lot noisier, 37405 has just arrived at Norwich for crew training ready to for push-pull working to replace the top and tail 47s on the DMU replacement set that runs on the Yarmouth & Lowestoft lines.

Just checked last years RHTT diagrams and the night circuit went to Lowestoft via the East Suffolk and returned the same way. There is the odd rail drop and ballast trains over there and tampers etc but nothing regular

Cheers guys, that's what I thought.

There certainly used to freight to Lowestoft and Cantley's sugar beet factory but I was unaware of any recent new diagrams. We're potentially looking for a new casa-del-goldfish near the route so I thought best to check before mrs sg gets too upset. 37s on dmu replacements sound entertaining though :)

Russ is correct. Only non-passenger stuff to go into Lowestoft in the past couple of years has been a light engine class 68, a tamper or class 66's with auto-ballasters.

There's a railtour, headed by a B1, due in next Sunday.

37059 got there last Tuesday and 37405 got to Reedham on Thursday. Both on training runs for greater Anglia drivers

Let me know when those services are more regular, still the wrong side of the country to see what's going on properly there and It's one I'd like to watch. A trip to the new potential casa-del-satan may have to coincide with when it's running.

The last airshow had trains with a 37 on one end and a 47 on the other. On one of the return workings a brawl broke out in one of the coaches as the train passed oulton broad north , the pass com was pulled and it took the best part of an hour for the police to sort things out,two other airshow specials were stuck behind it

Here it is leaving the scene after the persons had been removed

It is a lovely part of the world. I am somewhere along it, but I might be at one end or the other!

By saying it's a lovely part of the world suggest there's 1 particular end you're not at ;)

Sadly, house sale fell through, however we will continue looking for something similar.
