GWR 78xx Manors in BR lined black

Hi,

I have a spare GW Manor and quite fancy doing it out in BR Lined black. I've seen plenty of pictures of preserved locos in this livery, however I've not found any in BR service days, which is beginning to make me think it's a preservation on livery?

Did the Manors carry this livery in BR days, and if so does anyone know which specific locos did?

Thanks,
Alan

Don't know if you have seen this on the other thread but I thought I would repost it here.

I believe that 7820-29 were all painted in lined black from new and retained this livery until they underwent blastpipe modifications. Here is a good one of 7820 Dinmore Manor in lined black. It can be a little hard to tell but I am pretty sure that is the original pattern chimney rather than the later tall, narrow one.

Hi Alan,

Here are the specific dates that the BR built Manors carried lined black before they were repainted plain black. Info courtesy of the late Bill Peto.

7820 Dinmore Manor  (Nov 50 - Jan 55)

7821 Ditcheat Manor  (Nov 50 - Aug 55)

7822 Foxcote Manor  (Dec 50 - Dec 55)

7823 Hook Norton Manor  (Dec 50 - Apr 56)

7824 Iford Manor  (Dec 50 - Aug 53)

7825 Lechlade Manor  (Dec 50 - Apr 56)

7826 Longworth Manor  (Dec 50 - Jan 56)

7827 Lydham Manor  (Dec 50 - Aug 55)

7828 Odney Manor  (Dec 50 - Dec 53)

7829 Ramsbury Manor  (Dec 50 - Nov 53)

Hope this info is of use.

Regards,

Andy.

Thank you Andy, this is superb.

I will be modelling 7827, which is the only one I can get nameplates for in N gauge, so it's good to know it had a reasonable period of time in this livery.

I think the Manor looks rather smart in lined black - a bit moreso than the austere plain black!

Thanks,

Alan

I have to say I prefer them in the more austere plain black, but nevertheless here is a photo I took of 7827 at Kingswear that you may like.

Andy.

Nameplates were usually black but a handful of locos did receive red nameplates in the early days after nationalisation. I cannot remember if 7827 was one of them without Peto's Register to hand.

Thanks to all those who've made comments and assisted with this so far - my loco is coming on - just the splashers to do now and tidy up a few small blemishes.

Bit of a cruel artificially lit photo, but I'm reasonably happy with it so far.

Cheers,
Alan

You have made a cracking job of that. Having lined a steamer myself, I am impressed by the quality of your finish. Did you go for Fox or ModelMaster transfers?

These were Fox transfers - they tend to do a decent job in my experience, never perfect, but lining is hard!

Now building up the mojo to tackle possibly the hardest bit - the splashers!

Cheers,

Alan
