GWR Diesel Deliveries

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how the GWR delivered diesel oil to the AEC railcars? Was it by road or was there a dedicated fleet of tankers? If by rail, does anyone know of a photo as would make an interesting model...

Given that the quantities involved were relatively small, it's quite likely they simply used '50 gallon' oil drums, brought in using ordinary opens. After all, the Army used 'jerry-cans' to bring fuel for their tanks during WW2, and these used a lot more fuel.

See this topic. They were all based at largish sheds, and refuelled from gravity fed tanks. As they carried sufficient fuel for their daily working diagrams, they would not have been refuelled elsewhere. I've not seen any photos of them being refuelled or any information on how the sheds were supplied.

Hi All,

PURE SPECULATION WARNING...

At Didcot there is a rare example of a GWR built tanker wagon - No. 43949:

The system used to fill the oil tanks in the oil store in the loco shed uses the vacuum system on the locos to draw the oil into the tanks - it's really clever if you haven't seen it work! The GWR had many sheds, Didcot included, that didn't have road access so oil drums of some kind or the above tanker could deliver. That's how I would do it but like Buffalo, I haven't seen proof...

All the best,

Castle
