J68 Buckjumper colours

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of building Connoisseur 0 gauge kit of the GER/LNER J68. Does anyone know if these locos were ever painted blue? Internet sites seem to suggest they were always black, but the ones I've found are a bit vague.

Thanks

At the time when these locos were built and up to the time of the First World War GER passenger engines were painted blue.

Numbers 41 to 50 of this class (LNER J68) were Westinghouse fitted and used on passenger trains, so they should have been painted blue.

Later batches were unfitted and built for shunting, presumably they would have been in black.

Information from the GER Society web pages.

As DaveF says!

My luminary from the GERS also repeats this, saying:

One batch of 10 were blue, being passenger engines as opposed to shunters. However if the engine is to be painted in GER blue, the cab will need to be rebuilt with a new raised roof and a parallel chimney provided as the kit is the LNER version.

I think the answer to your future dilemmas, Dave, is to join GERS. Come on in, the water's lovely!!!!!!  :-)

Thanks for the information, gentlemen. It's good news, bad news. This will be the first etched kit I've built for thirty years so I'm not sure I want to get involved with alterations just yet, especially as there appears to no source of transfers or numberplates - unless you know different. I'm not really into GER but like pre-grouping locos and liveries. I wanted to do a hand-lined loco and the GER blue looked as though it might be achievable.

Thanks anyway, even if this one waits for a bit.

I don't know the 7mm kit to which you refer, but in British Railway's days, 68619 the Liverpool Street Station East Side Pilot was painted in "GE" blue, lined out, GER crest under BR number and BR later crest on the tank sides. See "Steam in East Anglia - A Colour Portfolio".

It may be an option.
