Popsicle49
Trust this is the correct forum? Hello, I was just about ready to start building my O gauge garden layout when a potentially serious problem scuppered my plans. I'm running a Bassett-Lowke Scotsman, A Hehr Cock O The North and an MTH finescale Bavarian loco - all 3-rail. I chose modern Maldon track because it can accommodate coarse and fine scale running but while all three locos work happily on standard curves and straights, the points prove a problem. I chose the Maldon express point but none of the locos will cross the points (going straight through rather than on to the branch) without the driving wheels dropping down into the 9mm gap which occurs before the V of the frog. MRC are sending me a standard point with a 6mm gap. Like a patient with two doctors each telling me something different, I'm the meat in the sandwich between The Bassett-Lowke Society and Maldon Rail Centre (both of whom have been excellent). The former tell me that B/L locos will work on old Maldon (i.e.Michael Foster designed) points but not on the modern variety. MRC tell me that the points are not only identical in specification but also were designed with the consultation of Michael Foster himself. I've been advised that best practice for garden layouts is a point-free one which is easily achievable but not quite so much fun. My garden is small and the design of the trackwork maximised the available space. Does anybody have experience of using Maldon pointwork which might be of benefit here? There'll only be one set of points on the layout and the locos will pass along the straight for general running, only taking the branch v slowly to return to the station on a spur. It seems a curious state of affairs but I'm not going to give up without a fight and would welcome any contributions.TIA Popsicle49
APOLLO
Gargraves 3 rail track from Tennents of Halesowen may be worth a look. I haven't used this track myself as I'm 2 rail. http://www.tennentstrainsofhalesowen.co.uk/gargraves.html Brit15
