70021 Morning Star
. COMBINED HEADCODE DISCS & OIL LAMPS ON EARLY BR DIESELS Looking at photographs of early diesel locomotives, they're all fitted out with headcode discs. There's plenty of information on what the various combinations mean. But there's a problem: these same locomotives are also often seen sporting an oil lamp. Why is this? Also, is there any headcode/train reporting number meaning of the positioning of the oil lamp(s) (I've only ever seen one: could there be two?)? For example, if we're looking at a Western Region Class 22 diesel-hydraulic with the milk train code of O O (] on its bottom row of discs - (] on the top disc - where would the oil lamp be positioned, left or right, and does it have any significant meaning by where it's positioned?
