RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 19, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2015 Well, why not? All my other loco projects are fictional/neverwazzas, so it's about time I tried to model a real one. The (?) in the title is because I'm not really 100% on how I'm going to do this yet. I dare not tackle the DJH kit, as apart from my complete lack of confidence and competence in working with metal, I've heard it's a rather difficult kit to work with. Here's the prototype, courtesy of wikipedia: So, this loco class (812 or 652) was an enlargement of the successful CR 'Jumbo' (294 or 711) class, with bigger cylinders, higher pitched boiler, and higher boiler pressure. The 294 was very similar in appearance to the Highland Railway K class ('Barneys'), which with larger cylinders than the Jumbo, and higher boiler pressure than both the 294 and 812, developed more tractive effort. Stats aside, there are a lot of similarities between the 294 and 812 classes. My current intended starting point is a GBL C Class (Originally was a Golden Arrow resin body for an SECR O1) This should provide the boiler, smokebox, sandboxes and splashers, and running plate. Here's a pic of one posted by skinnylinny Think I'll need to saw horizontally across the bottom of the smokebox and firebox, space it out and blend back in. The chimney and dome will need cutting down. I'm hoping to use a GBL/Triang Caley 'single' cab to adapt to the 812 type (which has a slightly different cab cutout style to the single and Jumbo). The tender, I think, can be bodged from various GBL parts. The specs for the 3 Scottish loco classes can be seen here: CR 294 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_Railway_294_and_711_Classes HR K http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Railway_Drummond_0-6-0_Class CR 812 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_Railway_812_and_652_Classes
Horsetan
Interesting. Brave as well, given that Caley Coaches produces an 812 kit. Apparently easier than DJH.....
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 19, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2015 Interesting. Brave as well, given that Caley Coaches produces an 812 kit. Apparently easier than DJH..... Yes I know, it's metal though (I think? Not so sure now..) and I just don't have the skills It's also £115 for the kit, no motor, wheels, gearbox - eek! It does look fabulous for those who have the knowledge, though. Am trying to work out if the boiler diameter is larger on the 812 or if it's just an optical illusion caused by the higher mounting. http://www.caley.com/class812.php
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted March 19, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 19, 2015 Come to think of it, though, the disassembled GBL C Class in my drawer would probably make a much better starting point than the GE O1 kit. Cheaper, too.... (first post duly edited)
