comparisons or reviews of 33" and 36" American wagon wheels

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am trying to find any review or comparisons of code 88 , that is semi-finescale HO rolling stock wheels.  I know that 33" wheels should be 9.6mm and that 36" should be 10.5mm, but are there any that vary from this?

I have an odd project been sitting in my drawer for a long time that calls for 10mm disc wheels so I am hoping to  be the beneficiary of some manufacturer's inaccuracy.  33" wheels on the big side or 36" ones on the small side would do fine.

Regards,

Ben

I presume the 10mm disc is a 2'6" wheel.

Question - What is the wheel fitted to?

It may be that the wheel could represent a worn wheel and be within the 9.6mm dimension. The amount of allowable wear depends on the specific wheel type.

I've used the Reboxx 88 wheels and I thought they were very nice

The 10mm wheels would be fitted to a TT/3mm diesel loco , the most likely chassis option has 2mm dia axles. As I only need 12, they could be milled down from code 100 to something more finescale I imagine.  But I'd prefer .088" if possible.

Thanks for the tip regarding the EMU wheels from Bratchell Models. Will try to follow that up.

In all the reviews, etc that I've seen for US car wheels (having modelled US RRs for 25 years or more) I don't recall ever seeing mention of the actual model wheel diameter in either mm or in - I think it's just generally assumed that if it says 33" or 36" wheel, that what it scales out as!

What IS often mentioned is the axle length - there's a bunch of data out there listing each manufacturer's axle length(s) and what US trucks they best suit. Most are around the 1" (25mm) length, pin-point to pin-point, +/- a few thou either way. I know Reboxx certainly sell their wheels by axle length.

Axle material and diameter also varies - Kadees have a chunky (3mm?) delrin axle, Intermountain a much narrower (1.5mm) metal axle.

I've used a bunch of the code 88 wheels (mostly Kadees) where the finer wheel profile will be visible, so mostly on hoppers and tanks. No issues with them running through Peco Code 75 or 83 pointwork.
