Advice, tips re changing scales

Recommended Posts

I think I've mentioned on this forum that I'm starting a small (27" wide by 68" long) N scale layout. I've been thinking of switching to N scale for several years now, mainly b/c I have very limited space.  But, when someone recently gave me a batch of N scale track, accessories  and a few buildings, that was enough to lure me to try this scale. (I should have started in N scale 10 years ago but that's a long story!)

I'm still keeping most of my 00 locos, rolling stock and a small 00 layout, so I can still run this scale when the mood strikes. However, my plan is that my N scale layout will become my main focus. I'm funding most of this by selling off a few extra bits of 00 and HO stuff, that I will no longer need or have duplicates of.

I was wondering how many other members have dabbled in two scales and if we could compare notes? I want to avoid making too many mistakes but, since I am having to do this gradually, that should force me to think sensibly!

Thanks,

Rob

I work in both EM and N (1:160 American), I have also dabbled in 2mm Finescale and HO American. So far I have found that if I want to do something British I'll do it in EM while if I want to do something American it will be N. I find that the other two (2FS and HO) take a back seat as I already have a way to express that prototype.

You haven't said what prototypes or eras you're interested in, but now would be a good time to consider a change if that is of interest. It's far easier now than once you've bought everything you currently have again.

Thanks. Good point re prototypes. For my 00 layout, I generally modelled the Somerset & Dorset Railway in the 1950s & '60s -- but I also had a lot of stock and could run GWR, LMS or LNER if I wanted! My main focus was still late-BR steam  (Era 5 in Bachmann's reckoning).

I'm still deciding re my N scale layout. I definitely want it to be the 4 groupings period. I'm mainly interested in steam so it has to be in the steam era. I'm thinking of making it the Somerset & Dorset again but in the '30s or mid-40s, so I could run a lot of LMS stock. It partly depends on what's currently available in British N scale -- there seems to be a lot of GWR and a fair bit of LMS out there.
