Tase
Just announced that Richie Benaud passed away today at the age of 84. Growing up listening to his distinctive voice back in the day when the BBC showed live Test cricket is one the things that I will always remember. Most recently he commentated on Channel Nine in Australia. Still the same wonderful voice. Great cricketer to boot. A legend lost. RIP.

aussiebrfan
A LEGEND both on (Australia never lost a series while he was captain) and off the field (25+ plus years as welcoming him into our living rooms as commentator). The voice of cricket and summer has left us. RIP
jukebox
A sad day indeed. His minimalist (and when it was there, intelligent) commentary is a blueprint sadly no longer followed.
Markeg
A true gentleman and a great ambassador for the game. RIP Richie. Condolences to the family and friends. Mark
Mike at C&M
One of the great voices of summer. R.I.P Richie - a marvellous innings.
The Lurker
Sad news. For me and my friends he was the voice of cricket. We imitated the playing styles of various cricketers, but the commentator was always Richie. "That's bo'd'im" as we used to say. I think that it is appropriate to say he's had a good innings RIP
RhBBob
One of the funniest aspects of his personality was the difference between his commentary in Oz as distinct from that in England. He was most impartial whilst in England but very - how shall I put it ?- partisan whilst at home Great bloke - he will be much missed.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted April 10, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 10, 2015 A great bloke and a great commentator - I don't remember him as a player as I was too young when he retired from the game. RIP Richie.

jonny777
No. Richie Benaud cannot be allowed to die. He was one of the great cricket commentators, and had a wonderfully dry sense of humour. I could listen to his commentary for days, and his predictions invariably came true. He was also one of the fairer minded cricketers, and was certainly not amused by Michael Atherton's 'soil in pocket' episode, and the silly excuses that were dreamed up afterwards. Thanks for many decades of entertainment, Richie.
Tassie Tex
Yes he was part of our living rooms on both radio and television, an icon in commentary. Retired injured for 84. He never could say two, always "chew for twenty chew"

RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted April 10, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 10, 2015 Mourning, Everyone A man loved by many for his effortless and sage commentary. He will always be part of my cricketing education, and be well remembered from those long summers spent listening and watching, before full time work got in the way. A life well-lived. RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted April 10, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 10, 2015 A great player, one of the all time great captains and a commentating icon, he will be much missed. His calm delivery, perspective, dry wit and insight into the game all lifted him above typical sports commentators.
62613
He commentary style would have been good in any sport. He didn't really commentate, of course; he let the action speak for itself, and at the end of an over, or after an incident, he summarised. Dan Maskell in the tennis was the same. If there's nothing important to say, say nothing.
DropTheTap
I used to walk home from school at noon so I could sneak a fix of whatever test match the BBC was showing that day while eating my lunch. As I've emigrated (to somewhere where cricket is just an insect, unfortunately) I didn't know he hadn't worked for the BBC since 2005: I bet commentary in the UK wasn't the same. He generally seemed to be given the opening sessions... "Morning from Trint Bridge on this beautifewl day as Eengland bowl first against the Wist Indies. In the commintiry box with me tiday is Jiffrey Boycott. Morning Jiffrey." "Mornin' Ritchie. Mornin' evrywun." RIP Richie. You'll be greatly missed. RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted April 11, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 11, 2015 For me the best TV commentator on any sport although of course cricket suited his concise, quiet style particularly well.
Waverley West
I can only agree wholeheartedly with what's been said. A sad loss. He and Bill Mclaren were the two sports commentators who made the biggest impression on me in my formative years in particular. Sad to think they have both departed. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/apr/10/richie-benauds-best-quotes?CMP=share_btn_fb
