LNER J79 at the Bowes railway

Hi all,

I'm looking for information regarding J79 1787 which was given to the Bowes railway. Having read what's in my kit instructions & on the LNER website it says it became Bowes number 5. I'd like to know if the loco was repainted & renumbered or if it kept the LNER plain black livery with numbers & letters.

Cheers

Simon

.

NER 'H2' later LNER J79 No.1787 was sold to the Bowes Railway circa 8/36 where it became No.5. It was scrapped in 1946.

.

There is a photo of the loco in "The Bowes Railway" by Colin E Mountford pub. Industrial Railway Society / Tyne & Wear Industrial Monuments Trust p.106 (ISBN 0 901096 25 3 - hardbound, 0 901096 26 1 - softbound) which shows the loco in a plain (black ?) livery with no noticeable modifications, no apparent lining or lettering save for an oval number plate "No.5" on the bunker side.

.

Another "H2" / J79 0-6-0T LNER No.1662 was sold to the British Sugar, Cantley Works via William Jones (dealer ?) in 8/37. This loco survived longer, until about 1957 with some wierd and wonderful adaptations - possibly to supply steam as a stationary boiler ?

.

A photo of the latter loco appears in "Mainline to Indsutry" by Frank Jones pub. Lightmoor Press p.61. (ISBN 1 899889 02 7 )

.

Hope this helps ?
