Simon Moore
I'm looking at doing a pre grouping paint scheme for me next build & I'd like to know what colours to paint a J50 in. I'd like to do a great northern livery. Cheers Simon
jwealleans
I believe a number, if not all, were outshopped in the wartime grey livery and kept it for some time afterwards. Edited April 20, 2015 by jwealleans
Poor Old Bruce
The RCTS 'Green Book' says 221-230, the first batch of J50s, built in 1922, were painted in "the old lined-out green livery. Of the similar J51s, built during WW1, the first twenty were painted in "lined slate grey" while the ten built in 1919 were "unlined slate grey". The J51s looked similar to the J50s but had different diameter (second hand) boilers when built. The GNR regharded them all as J23s, the LNER split them into J50 and J51. Simon Moore
Thank you for the information Bruce that's great. I shall have a chat tonight with one of the club members about how best to tackle the paint job. Regards Simon
edcayton
The J50 looks very modern for a pre-group loco to my eyes. I'd be interested to see one in the full glorious GNR scheme. Ed
HRH_Dan_Hull
Which colour did you go for in the end? looking to paint a couple of GNR models in GNR grey, but I am unsure which brand of paint/shade to use.
