UID Class 20

The Class 47 Preservation Project Archive has recently acquired the photo below of a Class 20. We cant make a positive ID though there are a couple of things on it that might make it possible.

 

As you can see it has 66A stencilled on it, Polmadie, and there is a rectangular box below the left had windscreen as you look at the photo. There also appears to be some extra pipework on the bufferbeam. There is also space on the cabside for tablet catching equipment. 

 

Any thoughts as to which it could be?

The extra pipe on the bufferbeam is a through steam pipe - the 20s didn't have boilers, but early on they had the pipe so they could be used in multiple with boiler fitted locos on passenger trains.

I believe most had this pipe initially, but don't know when they started removing them.

Have had a chance to have a google and can refine the number range a bit.

D8028-34 and 8070-8127 were 'scottish' from New and had catcher recess, steam pipe, snowplough brackets (either side of drawhook) and a MU dummy socket mounted the top of the bufferbeam.

Apparently 28-34 had catchers fitted but 70-127 only had the recess.

When did 20s start getting the small yellow panels? EDIT: 8110-127 had them from New, but don't know when earlier locos got them

 

BRdatabase has a listing for 66A, scroll down for the 20s at various times

I don't know if there's a better list under 'classes' as I cant get the menu to work properly on my tablet.

Just wondering if the rectangle under the l/h windscreen is actually some sort of plate/board mounted on the lamp iron?

Bufferbeam pipework looks standard for both the tablet recessed batches. 2 control air, MU receptacle, vac, coupling, through steam, 2 control air and MU cable (l-r) 

Lack of catcher gear suggests it's the later batch D8070-127.

 

It ISN'T D8085/6, which did have extra air pipes for the movement of the then-new 'Blue Trains' - later Class 303 EMUs to and from Glasgow Works.

 

So that's narrowed it down a bit more!

 

The 'box' below the window is something mounted on the lamp-iron, so isn't a permanent fixture, I would suggest.

Could it be D8085/86 in later life with the EMU air pipes removed?

In that link to D8085 there is a picture of D8095 in green no yellow panels, but with OHLW signs. As the UID photo has yellow panels and OHLW signs it might indicate the loco belongs to the later batch, D8110-8127, which had yellow panels from new. Of these only D8117-8127 where allocated to Polmadie from new.
