hayfield
A few weeks ago I won a Keyser tram loco on Ebay No man but not too bad, described as a non runner. Screw missing which holds the bottom chassis plate to the motor A little battered and hand painted as per the norm of the day, The main damage is to one of the cow catchers which is bent and missing the middle 3 bars and a part of the bottom chassis plate missing A few days of soaking the body in the caustic soda bath has removed most of the paint and softened the glue. Now in a box awaiting a rebuild, all for £18 inc postage OK Southeastern Finecast in conjunction with Branchlines have re-issued it minus a motor (must chat up Dave Ellis to see if he would sell a replacement roof and roof pipework for a second one I have)
hayfield
Found a few more photos prior to paint and glue stripping A big blob of glue across one cow catcher As you can see the cow catcher with a hole in it (was there already) is undamaged from the glue removal Chassis which needs a couple of screws to get it working I have found another method of both cleaning up the residue of paint and removing impact adhesive, Cellulose thinners, must get a bigger can
Il Grifone
Cellulose thinners takes no prisoners! (Death to enamel paint and polystyrene.) It seems very difficult to get hold of these days - H&S, as it is very inflammable, I suppose. At least it is not as corrosive as caustic soda. Il Grifone
Halfords for cellulose thinners, http://www.halfords.com/motoring-travel/cleaning-body-repair/fillers-preparation/barrettine-cellulose-thinner-500ml Cheers,Ray. Thanks! I'll bear it in mind. The last lot I bought was a couple of Euro a litre IIRC (in Italy - it's still available there) certainly not anything like £15. I can't have been looking very hard as apparently Wilko have it (at a price, but it does come in a convenient small size). http://www.wilko.com/preparation/wilko-cellulose-thinners-125ml/invt/0182560
hayfield
Think the Halfords size will be better value. If building the old wooden body coaches, a thinned down coat of sanding sealer which is cellulose based is a great was to prepare the bodies for painting and of course it is also very useful to clean airbrushes. hayfield
I bought a K's bodyline GWR 97xx off eBay for a knock down price of £12.49 inc postage Well a bit of wreck Missing quite a few bits, Painted a nasty black colour Plenty of what I thought was glue sloshing about So a dunk in Caustic soda solution was the order of the day. Black seems to be a hard colour to remove though Thankfully there was a coat of green paint below and its come up quite well. There was a few bits of very bad soldering which needed filing off and the glue also needed a bit of persuasion in places. Why did I buy this wreck, well I have another equally bad 97xx where the body panels have been played about with, this seemed a good buy as I have the parts required to rebuild this one. Having said that I may have some of the missing bits in the spares box as the construction of the smoke box differs on both locos. I also have a Wills etched chassis, which will give me the option of a cab free of motors.
Il Grifone
Hmmmmm! Missed that one..... I've been looking for one for ages, but they usually go for silly money! The kit was designed to fit the Dublo R1 chassis, though K's also did it as a complete kit. The Dublo chassis has completely the wrong wheelbase (also for an R1!), which is a pity as I have several in the spares box, whereas I'm short of 7' 3" + 8' 3" ones. (There are a couple of Gaiety ones, but the less said about those the better!)
