4mm (multiple) coach storage boxes?

Afternoon,

 

For wagons storage I use the likes of this:

I find them good for both kit built items which do not come with boxes, as well as being far less time consuming to load/unload than millions of much bulkier blue or red boxes.  Coaches, however, being that bit taller always seem to fall just outside the compartment sizes of these.  Ideally I'd like to find a box with compartments around the 6cm x 4cm (h) x 27cm-30cm mark, but have searched without success.  The one below would probably do, but is a bit deeper than I need so would need more packing to stop things rattling around.

Has anyone found anything that fits this description? or have other solutions to the problem? Ideally I'd like a nice simple clip lid container that will carry 3 or 4 coaches.  Unlike the manufacturers packing I am not trying to get things shipped across from China, I just want them protected from dust and potentially taken to an exhibition or 2, but without taking up 3 times the items volume.

I've used a box file, with some home made sections of corrugated card. You can get a rake of coaches in quite easily.

Staples and Hobbycraft stock the range of Really Useful boxes and I use the 10 litre version for mine.

Try Really Useful Boxes, - I use the 10L for multiple vehicles. Shop around for best prices though, Staples were £14.99 each, so last week I went to Rymans, paid something like £38 for 5 delivered.

Thanks for the suggestions - the box file approach sounds easier for getting cardboard sections to adhere to.

 

The really useful boxes sound good - I have a 4L one somewhere that I previously attempted to make something useful from.  The reasons why I didn't get on with this were that my dividers were made with cork (for shock absorbance) which turned out to be far too flexible to be particularly viable, and I also quite like having the clear lid to see at a glance what is in there. This was also a minus point for the really useful box as a whole as the depth made keeping stock vertical more appropriate.  If keeping them in rakes though this argument goes away.

 

I suppose, being naturally lazy and having found an off the shelf solution to wagon storage I was hoping that something equally useful would be available that little bit larger, so maybe I should just revisit some of the open boxes available to adaption.

I like box files with card and / or foam dividers.  I would like to find some large elastic bands to go round each bos, to prevent the contents launching themselves, in one of those 'bombs away' moments.....

 

Any suggestions for such large bands?

I use the (usually) blue stacking boxes that mushrooms come in. Got quite a lot from supermarkets several years ago. They are just right for mk1s and 2s. Think that seven fit nicely across the box, double layer gives 14 per box. I bought a pack of clear decent quality poly bags to wrap each coach in,so they're quite snug. Travelled many miles to shows without damage but for some reason I always seem to have less bags than I should. I did find at one show that one of our crew was using one for rubbish!

i use "PAPPIS" boxes from ikea approx 34x24x26mm about 80 pence each. i make up four trays from cardboard i can get 20 coaches in each box.

I've now replaced the strips of foam in my RU boxes above because of problems sticking them and now use the ready made inserts from JB Modelworld. Not cheap but excellent and worth it considering the actual cost of some coaches.

 

 

 

These also have a foam cover over the top.

 

If you use these you need to be careful putting coaches in as any fragile pipework etc can catch in the foam......guess how I know?

I use shirt boxes, but only for storage-my trains stay at home.

Work a treat with our large volume of stock on Abbotswood and 10 coaches per box - dividers are adjustable

If only you'd asked about six months ago, Ernie..

Someone transposed a digit on the stationery order, and we got about a kilo's worth of long elastic bands in error. As our stationery people never make mistakes, there was no mechanism to return them, so some of the younger controllers started twanging them at one another. The kilo is now scattered over the tops of light fittings and other inaccessible locations...

I did get some from Lakeland Plastics once; otherwise, it's Staples or somewhere, I suppose.

Mix or match possible between trays - I reinforce the top tray with one of the supplied separation sheets and tape on the corners to prevent disasters, bott0m tray stays in the box.

 

Foam added to protect couplings on coaches - those Hornby close couplings only need a knock to make them real swines to couple up

I found that but I saw him at a show. If you e-mail him - jb2mmworld@aol.com I'm sure he'll give you details of OO. Don't know where you reside but he can be found at various shows (mainly in the South I think as he's based in Bucks)

Try local tyre Fitters/suppliers they may have old inner tubes which can be cut into bands which may suit commercial fitter will have bigger ones

Also a good supply of resilient track underlay instead of cork.

He does do OO/HO versions as Granddadbob shows above.

IMHO they are a very worthwhile investment. I use them for EMUs and they are around £100 for a two car set, so for four sets in a RUB 10litre box ..... need I say more?

Easy storage and removal particularly at exhibitions.

Would that be T scale coaches?
