topsy11
Hi, I've ordered a couple of N Brass OHLE portals and received them today. I've had a look at putting one together but can't quite work out how the leg attaches to the gantry with the little flap piece? Do any of the little triangle brass bits need to be used?? Also this is the first time I've built anything out of brass. Whats the best way to solder the kit together? Is it best to tin one side and join the piece together and apply a little heat to melt the solder? Sorry for the newbie questions but we all have to start somewhere! RMweb Premium Trainshed Terry Posted May 8, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2015 I have assembled many of the OHL structures for and friend of mine for his "N" layout in the past you have to read the instructions very carefully to understand how they go together, the other thing did you get the bending jigs to go with the kits, as with out that tool the structures can be easily distorted and a further recommendation is that soldered construction is a must. I hope the image shows the structures that you mention. Who kits are the structures made by. This image has be authorised for use and is copyrighted to me. Please ask before down loading . Regards. topsy11
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've got the bending formers to help shape the portals. Hmmm I looked at doing it like your image but it didn't look right and also didn't look like the picture that come with the kit. I'm not sure if 00 is different to N gauge Thanks again Mark
freebs
I thought you were building 00 Mark?
RMweb Premium Trainshed Terry Posted May 8, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2015 OK. it would help to know which gauge you are modelling please.
topsy11
Apologies, yes I'm modelling in 00 gauge, that's why I'm not sure if the N ones you built for your friend are different to the 00 gauge ones. http://www.nbrasslocos.co.uk/kitimages/ooohle/oo4530portalweb.gif I can't find any clear pictures from overhead so maybe that's how it should be. RMweb Premium Trainshed Terry Posted May 8, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2015 That is the structures that are illustrated in the image, but the "N" gauge version. They where fun to make up as there are some custom built structures as well. . A better view of the structures
topsy11
Well I've just had a go at putting one together and its turned into a disaster! I've managed to snap the flap off the girder beam that connects it to the leg and struggling to get the bloody solder to flow for a nice joint so I've ruined one and burnt my fingers!! Maybe I'll just stick with the Dapol masts.

The next big question is what wattage iron are using as I have found that anything 25watts is not man for the job. I personal use a temperature controlled 45watt soldering iron and a water based flux paste. Soldering these structures can not be rushed, as the image shows and the "N" gauge ones where a challenging.
