North British 4 Plank Open

Recommended Posts

A question for all the North British fans.

I have this wagon winging its way to me.

For a 1930's period, would the single block brake still be fitted, or would it have been fitted with a Morton two block or Freighter brake?

Another question, would the large NE have seen the wagon out, or might it have received the small NE in the bottom left hand corner?

Thanks in advance.

Wagons of this type pretty much went to the great wagon bonfire with the independent each side single block brake still fitted. Looking at the LNER wagon censuses a small proportion of the original build (under 5% of the total) probably made it to BR ownership, but will meet their end quickly thereafter. Cannot recall seeing a picture of one with the small lettering, but it must have happened, photos are going to be rare...

Thanks,

That'll do me.

Brakes as they are, large N E and a weather worn grime all over.

That will make it look that bit different.  I've a picture of Northiam yard, with a whole string of 5 plankers.

Once again, thanks

Sorry as not got my books to hand but I think the answer is yes they did get small lettering towards the end of use.

Agree it wasnt many in number that survived that late.

Pretty sure the NBR Wagons book by Hooper has some images of modified examples with "add on tanks" looking pretty manky ??? also labeled Shettleston

An alternative is that some of the NBR 4 plankers retained their NBR livery into the mid 30's too - Peter Talow's LNER Wagon Volume 3 has a lots of useful photos.

This is how I completed a recent example.

Rob, thanks.

Is there a brake lever and single block on both sides of the wagon?

LNER Wagons V3 Scottish Area - Peter Tatlow

NE 708767 at Renfrew 1946, small lettering, single brake shoe.

NE 703983 1936, Large NE, single brake

NE 710754 late 1930s, large NE, single brake.

hope that helps

John

John thanks,

These extracts are just what I need. Might do the old "different numbers on each side" trick
