Satan's Goldfish
I picked myself up a cheap second hand Bachmann Railfreight brake van not long ago which I've been treating to a little customisation. However, I've noticed that it's body is not as tall as Hornby brake vans. Why is this? As can be seen in the pictures, length and width are fairly similar, it's just height that looks odd. Yellow ends and wasp stripes that i've added are so it can fill a 'push along a branch' function.

The Bachmann model is based on the Airfix model which is more correct in size, the Hornby one is over scale but is a good model for modfication. Satan's Goldfish
Lol so I've fettled with the wrong one then. The Bachmann one just looks too small to me when put with wagons. Many thanks.

giz
Is that the older Bachmann brake, not the current one? I'm guessing it is looking at the couplings. Was that not the old Mainline version? That always looked on the low side to me.
Satan's Goldfish
Yes it has older style couplings.
Mark Saunders
The Bachmann model is based on the Airfix model which is more correct in size, the Hornby one is over scale but is a good model for modfication. The original Bachmann model was the Mainline version of the BR van which shares a common body with their shorter LNER brake van which had a lower body! This was one of many compromises that were made in the traditions of the industry at the time and we are still living with some of them! 34theletterbetweenB&D
The Bachmann is the old job with Mainline origins. What Mainline did was make the body distorted in length to fit both a shorter chassis representing an LNER Toad 'E', and on a longer chassis for the LNER and BR Toad 'D' types. As such it is neither fish nor fowl, and not a model of anything...
Satan's Goldfish
Well......that explains that then. Oh well I'll find a use for it somewhere.
