brittannia
Is the soon to be issued { June 2015 last date known for expected delivery} Hornby Duchess Class City of Liverpool a suitable model for a renumber and name change for City of Birmingham? I have made some checks on suitability and I think they were built in the same batch ,ex streamliners and split running board at the chimney end, but would like to have my assumptions proved correct and anything that may be different. robmcg
46247 would have had streamlining and cut-down smokebox, and the split running board as you say, I'm not sure when the smokebox was changed to the full diameter front. I was painted red 5/58 and got a speedo, and AWS a little bit later. Early BR versions in BR green with the later tooling and rear-truck arrangement are as far as I know non existent unless you want sound, and 46247 in early BR green would cover c1950-whenever the smokebox was changed? brittannia
Thanks for your reply Rob , I have a Hornby City of Sheffield in green this loco was produced with the newer smoke box and I am presuming hopefully the Hornby City of Liverpool will also produced with the same. Cities of Liverpool and Birmingham were both repainted into green and fitted with new smoke boxes in 1953. So all being well I will change the running. numbers and also change the totem to later BR design depending if I can find when the totems were changed. geoffwba
According to my excellent book "The Duchess- Stanier's masterpiece" by Roger Mannion, City of Birmingham and City of Liverpool were from two different works orders- 414 and 415, but built to the same lot number 150. They were put into service in 1939 and 1943 respectively. Looking at photos, they appear to have the same front-end design. City of Birmingham is of course in Birmingham's Think Tank museum so if you want to look at it closely you could go and see it.
