Well I thought this might be a problem for SWMBO to get this extra £212 a year for my income because of her meagre income. The documentation calls for details of 'your' mortgage, a credit card or a loan.

So I applied online in her name and of course with no mortgage, no loan, no credit card or even overdraft facility, the system chucked 'me' out.  Consequently SWMBO will have to ring the 9p a minute line to HMRC+, no doubt to speak to someone less than half her age and explain that being long retired and living on pension income, we don't borrow money except from each other !!

+Since her Ladyship can 'start an argument in an empty room', I don't envy the person at the other end of the phone...

I also have applied for the Married Couples Tax Allowance, and I am awaiting the paperwork. I've been told that a council tax bill or utility bill will also fit the requirements, as it's something to do with proof of address. Why HMRC can't find that out without you proving it I don't know, it's a bit like when the tax credits come up for renewal, I have to tell HMRC how much I earned last year, don't they have that on file too?

Why do people get anything for doing nothing?.

I believe it is usually referred to as 'The Palace of Westminster'......or variously Government, the State, the EU etc., etc., etc..

Strange.  The Head of Household applied online a couple of weeks ago to give her unused tax allowance to me (we're both retired and only have state and company pensions).  She's not heard anything more, but at the time the system didn't throw her out and we don't have a mortgage.  Awaiting the progress of the application to wend its way slowly through the sausage machine at presnet........

Did you go through the Experian route online ?  Despite having borrowed money about 10 years ago, Swmbo was advised by Experian that she would have to ring HMRC - see above.

HMRC have advised Swmbo that the online system will be amended 'in the Summer' to cope with those who cannot apply using the online Experian rating.

Why do people get anything for having kids?.

They don't.  The purpose of Child Benefit is to ensure each child has food and clothing.  It is paid to the parent/guardian responsible for the child.  It is the kind of thing a civilised society does to ensure the wellbeing of the people who eventually pay for our state pensions, NHS etc.

Aaah, now had a chance to check with the Head of Household.  Apparently she's not as far down the route as I thought.  She's only 'registered an interest' on the HMRC website which required minimal detail from her at that stage and she's waiting for them to get back to her.  I advised her not to hold her breath..........

But that's the trick. To make sure you submit the same information, as they have on file.

Otherwise the alarm bells go off & you submit yourself to the dreaded 'tax audit'!

Ah but, in whose name are the utility bills and the council tax ?  Ours only have my name on them !!

Why do people get anything for doing nothing?.

A few years ago I worked in South Korea. One day, I was somewhat intrigued to see a row of women on their hands and knees on a lawn; I asked a workmate (who'd lived out there for several years) what they were doing. "Cutting the Grass", came the reply. "With scissors".

He wasn't joking - if you're on the dole out there (or whatever their equivalent is) then you work for it. Which includes cutting the grass outside Public buildings with scissors. Apparently by the time they get to the other side of the lawn it's time to start over again. By all accounts people are'nt on the dole for very long :)

I seem to recall that Singapore and Malaysia go one better, and have no dole at all......

Remember, in order to pay for our pensions, etc, in a few years time, we also need to keep those kids alive?

Don't knock 'benefits', if one has never been unlucky enough to have had need for them?

Agreed ! As a 'scrounger' myself, I am very supportive of the benefits system.

(the State Retirement Pension is paid from the Benefits fund)

Intrigued by all this.

As a widower, living in another European state, I am taxed there as per EU law, despite my pensions being paid in the UK. Fair enough - I probably pay less than those who live here in France but still illegally get taxed in the UK. But I intend to marry again - RMwebber Ashcombe is my intended victim - and she has a flat in Torbay, is rightly taxed as a UK citizen. If I claim her here as a new spouse, her tax affairs will come under French law, where the female gets crap conditions. So we expect to say nothing, continue to be taxed in separate countries, and will, indeed, not live together continuously to keep things going as we see best.

This is the inverse of "We're staying together for the sake of the dog!"

I seem to recall that at one time people imprisoned in Changi were not given any food.

Relatives would sit outside the gaol in the street cooking food to be taken in to the prisoners.

I reckon the idea does have some merit.
