Hi guys

I thought I'd start a thread for the new layout "Cudworth"

Some of you will have seen my cudworth workbench so I thought I'd start the layout one too

For those who don't know it ,it was a station on the Sheffield to Leeds midland old road .

At one time it was a busy place with lots of operational potential

My time period is 1957 to 1984ish So plenty of steam action and diesels later on I can all so model the Barnsley courthouse to cudworth pull puts train that ran untill 1959 (I think ) ,passinger services finished and the station closed in 1968 but I'm pushing the modellers licence and having it stay open untill the later period

I chose 1957 as the early date due to a track layout change in that year ,station north signalbox was closed and the track layout changed doing away with the hull and Barnsley connecting pointwork and changing the hull and Barnsley lines into sidings

Here's a few links to show what I'm on about

I'm modelling it in N gauge the layout will be 9 and half feet by 9 feet

Ill be doing handbuilt track (a first for me ) controlled by DCC with some loco's sound fitted

I've got about halfway through the scenic frames just waiting for some more softwood for the frames which have raisers for the trackbed which will be 9mm ply

Here's a few bad pics ,sorry I have lighting issues when I took my last layout down I took some lights down so I'll be putting them back up soon

The first ones are of the "cudworth bridges " and south junction signalbox will be where the midland box is

The last ones are of the station area on the left hand curve

There's still the fiddleyard boards to do and finish the senic boards ,

It'll be slow going to start with untill I've all the boards up

I'll post a track plan later once I've done one lol

Thanks

Brian

What a fascinating place Cudworth was in its heyday, and a great place to model, look forward to progress. There's an article on Cudworth in this month's Steam World magazine.

Hi caradoc and thanks I've got a copy of the the mag it's some pictures I'd not seen before

Your right cudworth had al sorts running through it ,even things like the condor ran through although mostly at night I believe

As well as coal, coke, long range passenger and freight it was a busy place

Once the woodworks done progress should speed up a bit

I've a work bench thread that I've started for the buildings ,structures and rolling stock I'll be building ,I've started with the main station building

Thanks

Thanks Neil ,

That's only 2 thirds of the plan there's a big cudworth station junction which joins on to the right hand side on the end of the station lol

Thanks

Just a little update ,been beavering away at this tonight

,post-5078-0-82642700-1431989958_thumb.jpg

It's the best I've done so far ,it still needs gaps cutting in the sleepers a tie bar and electric feeds but an old Lima coach bogie runs through it quite smoothly

I think this will be the first one for the layout

it'll be for the sidings ,I've still to get on with a full track plan so hopefully I'll remind myself tomorrow lol

Thanks

Thanks mate,

The points are quite enjoyable to build

And I quite agree there's lots of potential ,lots of stuff went through cudworth on trial aswell like the gas turbine APT and there was a service from (I think ) Plymouth to Scotland that went through in the 70's that had class 50 power so there's a big variety of loco's and stock I have to buy lol

The christmas list will be long this year lol

Thanks

Thanks Paul

I know there's plenty of places on here that show point building so sorry to bore you all lol

Here's a few pics of the point build

I did a simple jig for the V by measuring the template and just cutting the right angle into a piece of wood ,sometime in the future I will do some better jigs out of metal or something so they last longer that once lol

I've now fitted a tie bar and gapped the sleepers for the isolation

And I've washed it in soapy water with a toothbrush to get rid of all the residue

Thanks

Hi Joseph

I'm using the templates as a guide the gauges do all the work, the points / rails are to N gauge

The templates help with the angles of the V and help show me where things need to be

Thanks

Just had a mad dash to check the gauges are N gauge lol

I thought I'd ordered the right ones and tested them on a piece of code 55

Just tested them and they are the right gauge lol

I do constantly test them when I build with a couple of different things all n gauge I've an old Lima coach and a Dapol 21 tonner I use

I'll be wiring it up soon to test loco's through

Thanks

Thanks David ,although not as good as yours yet though lol

I used a slightly filed down sleeper for the tie bar I did consider a few other things but thought I'd try this and it works well

May use other methods yet I just like playing lol

I didn't use a joggle either I just filed the blades slightly more

I've been trying to have a mess on templot again not getting very far lol I've been trying for a curved b7 crossover with a connection off into the sidings but can just about get a cross over lol

Thanks

Ha thanks mate , I'm just a beginner it's all about practice ,and no doubt you'll do well ,there's a lot of good stuff out there for EM

,it looks more scarier than it is lol

A few books that are worth getting are

I'm going to order some of the finetrax for the plain and may pick a point kit up aswell see what there like but I'll be doing the big junctions in copper clad I think

I'll need a big order of sleepers and rail lol

I picked up a peco 15foot open bolster wagon to go at so I may do that and a track plan tonight

And got this ,

post-5078-0-12964900-1432221686_thumb.jpg

Getting giddy now lol

Thanks

Brian
