RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted May 31, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31, 2015 Hi all, As I have to move out of where I'm living by the end of June, I'm having to look into putting my stuff into storage as I can't find any landlords willing to let to someone on benefit. I need a reasonable amount of space (over 120 sq ft - it's a two bed house I'm in right now) for my model railway stuff and computers amongst a fair few other things. The cost of proper conventional building storage for that size is beyond my jobseekers allowance to stretch to, so I'm looking at sites that use containers. I'm concerned about the external nature of them though, in terms of humidity, temperature and mould/fungus, but having never used them before I don't know how much of an issue those things could be. Can anyone who's used a container facility give me any idea of what to expect? TIA
RMweb Gold teaky Posted May 31, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 31, 2015 This may help. http://storemates.co.uk/ I have not used them but saw them featured on BBC Click last year.
Horsetan
This may help. http://storemates.co.uk/ I have not used them but saw them featured on BBC Click last year. I did wonder what would happen if the householder decided to deny access......
Baby Deltic
The big thing with any storage is insurance. If you leave expensive stuff in a storage unit or building such as Safestore the insurance is astronomical. When I moved out of my flat, my valuable stuff like trains went straight to my new house. Stuff like clothes, records, CD's etc went in a storage unit temporarily.
RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted June 1, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 1, 2015 This may help. http://storemates.co.uk/ I have not used them but saw them featured on BBC Click last year. My very significant worry about that scheme is the loss of privacy and security. Do I really want the risk of some stranger rooting through my stuff? So not for me. The storage must be secure and safe in that regard.
RMweb Premium Bernard Lamb Posted June 1, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 1, 2015 Containers are OK for goods in transit and for short periods of storage. That's what they are designed to do. However they are rather cold and damp in a typical UK winter and any thing that might be affected by such conditions would probably come to some degree of harm. Any paper or material would certainly be at risk. When I had to dig items out from the wrong end of a forty footer in winter it was not an enjoyable experience. It might well be the cheapest option but I would not take the risk. Bernard
RMweb Premium Ian J. Posted June 1, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 1, 2015 Unfortunately I don't really have much choice other than a container it seems, as the costs for secure, safe, dry storage are just too high. I think my boxes, which are mostly cardboard ones, are going to suffer. God knows what state they'll be in when I retrieve them, and my books and clothes and the like... backofanenvelope
I'm not sure if this will be of any use to you Ian, but maybe if you could use some of these, might protect from the worst ravages?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't have the money to buy any new boxes (or rent any or what-have-you). My budget is pretty much non-existant. peter220950
Given that cost is probably an issue with storage boxes have you considered commercial shrink-wrap? - Assuming you don't need to be going in and out of packages on a regular basis. http://www.kitepackaging.co.uk/scp/pallet-wrap/stretch-films/ It's relatively cheap and gives some security so you could re-consider the storemates option. I would chuck in a handful of Silica bags as well to absorb any moisture/condensation. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/331158160939?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&rlsatarget=&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0 Just a thought. Interesting idea, but I'd still exclude storemates because I just couldn't trust an unknown like that. As for using shrink wrap to help protect stuff while in container storage, I don't think I could ensure that the boxes were sufficently sealed to prevent probable moisture or mould damage, and it wouldn't help with the temperature changes.
