Adrian Wintle
Amtrak train hit a car in Florida, but both occupants of the car survived - I have no idea how. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/amtrak-train-cuts-car-in-half-in-jacksonville-both-occupants-survive-1.3097225  Adrian

Spitfire2865
I like how the news reporters talk about how it "looks like she tried to beat the train" as if they arent sure of it. But thats been talk about to death. Â 3 more people now aware of the seriousness of level crossings, and no fatalities along with it. Though, exactly where the rear passenger got ejected to without serious injury? They definitely didnt end up in their seat.
RMweb Premium petethemole Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 The CCTV shows that the car is caught on the right rear and due to its speed splits open and spins round after it clears the track. The passenger was possibly shot out onto the roadside grass. Very lucky, but possibly traumatising.  Pete
Adrian Wintle
Apparently CNN believes that 'aware' is now a verb... Â They were very lucky that they got most of the way across before the train clipped the rear of the car - half a second slower and there would have been three fatalities. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 They were extremely lucky. The last time I dealt with a crash where the car was cut in two both occupants died. Â Jamie
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 In the video it looks like you can see the rear passenger being ejected from the car. According to reports this was the pregnant woman. I was wondering if she wasn't wearing a seat belt due to her condition, and if she had been the outcome would have been more tragic. Arthur
Â Watching things like that, you wonder, were they trying to beat the train, or were they totally oblivious to it?
Adrian Wintle
Watching things like that, you wonder, were they trying to beat the train, or were they totally oblivious to it?  The driver would have had to have swerved around (or driven through) a barrier. RMweb Premium Grovenor Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 The driver would have had to have swerved around (or driven through) a barrier. Which sort of explains why they were on the wrong side of the road. Keith
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 Just looked at the video in post 4, it appears that the car was going fast enough for it to leave the ground when it hit the crossing and it was still off the ground when the train hit it. Â Which sort of explains why they were on the wrong side of the road. Keith
CraigZ
Sheer and total stupidity on the part of the car's driver. No question. The driver tried to dodge the barriers....

That is not necessarily surprising. I know lots of crossings where you could get airborne without trying too hard, including some where you could do it without exceeding the speed limit. TTDB
A friend of mine is an Amtrak engineer based in Jacksonville I sent him a Facebook message about this incident and he replied late last night too say another grade crossing accident yesterday in the same area as his northbound auto train that he takes as far as Hamlet was delayed.
