Non-fatal level crossing accident in Florida - very lucky

Recommended Posts

I like how the news reporters talk about how it "looks like she tried to beat the train" as if they arent sure of it.

But thats been talk about to death.

3 more people now aware of the seriousness of level crossings, and no fatalities along with it.

Though, exactly where the rear passenger got ejected to without serious injury? They definitely didnt end up in their seat.

The CCTV shows that the car is caught on the right rear and due to its speed splits open and spins round after it clears the track. The passenger was possibly shot out onto the roadside grass. Very lucky, but possibly traumatising.

Apparently CNN believes that 'aware' is now a verb...

They were very lucky that they got most of the way across before the train clipped the rear of the car - half a second slower and there would have been three fatalities.

In the video it looks like you can see the rear passenger being ejected from the car. According to reports this was the pregnant woman. I was wondering if she wasn't wearing a seat belt due to her condition, and if she had been the outcome would have been more tragic.

Just looked at the video in post 4, it appears that the car was going fast enough for it to leave the ground when it hit the crossing and it was still off the ground when the train hit it.

Which sort of explains why they were on the wrong side of the road.

That is not necessarily surprising. I know lots of crossings where you could get airborne without trying too hard, including some where you could do it without exceeding the speed limit.

A friend of mine is an Amtrak engineer based in Jacksonville I sent him a Facebook message about this incident and he replied late last night too say another grade crossing accident yesterday in the same area as his northbound auto train that he takes as far as Hamlet was delayed.

By the way, this is an excellent web page to see Amtrak's status

Not an official Amtrak site but one that uses Amtrak data to create this map and tables...
