RMweb Premium skipepsi Posted June 5, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 5, 2015 When I make a hot drink for my wife and myself I put her cup on the left and mine on the right when she is well enough if she makes a drink she puts my cup on the left and hers on the right. Is this the same in other households or are we one off's?
Ozexpatriate
Are you right-handed? It is 'proper' to pour someone else's tea first. That is easier (when right handed) to fill the 'guest's' cup first on the left with the 'host's' cup on the right.
davefrk
Yes, her's on the left mine on the right, works for us both. Reason? I can't stand her coffee, she doesn't like mine.... Dave Franks.
peter220950
Because I take sugar and my wife doesn't I always carry her coffee in my right hand to remember which one is which, why? because we all know that the lady of the house is always right. RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted June 5, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2015 When I make her a hot drink or a sandwich I always put her cup/plate on the right. Partly because her tastes are often different from mine and partly 'cos she's always right, and partly 'cos I have to be careful about sugar due to Type 2 diabetes. Additonally if I'm making sandwiches and her filling is different from mine (eg including veg which may not be obvious from the outside) then I always cut my sandwich in half squarely and hers diagonally. That way we always get the right ones. Simples.

Smiffy2
When I make a hot drink for my wife and myself I put her cup on the left and mine on the right when she is well enough if she makes a drink she puts my cup on the left and hers on the right. Is this the same in other households or are we one off's? Traditionally (ie in the Middle Ages) the female side was the left (distaff) and the male right (staff). Refers to the hand that the staff and distaff were held in. I always put Julie's tea, dinner plate or whatever on the left, and we have now (after 43 years) agreed that it's a sensible thing to do... jcm@gwr
Ahh, but what happens if you put them on a tray (to carry from the kitchen), is it the left side from you carrying it, or as you pass it over?

RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted June 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2015 Hers on the left, mine on the right - need to maintain that arrangement as I have more sweetener in mine and I can get into serious trouble if they get mixed up. Is this the same in other households or are we one off's? No same here too. I'm left handed she's right. I put my cup/plate/whatever on the left, her's on the right. She does the opposite, puts her "item" on the left and mine on the right. Rob
Baby Deltic
This is all very good, but what if you are facing your wife when placing' the cups of tea? You put hers on you left and yours on your right, but then you turn round and sit down next to your wife. Now yours is on your left, and hers is on your right...... RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted June 6, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 6, 2015 I don't do hot drinks, so her cup is on either side. I'm also a leftie, so carry her mug with my right hand, or sometimes my left. (Random answer to match thread title).

Judge Dread
We have three cup/mug trees in our kitchen, mine, hers and visitors. As to placement of cups/mugs etc, I just do as I'm told, I bleed to easily these days to argue.

jonny777
Get two settees - one for you and one for her. Yep. That works perfectly for us; and if one happens to be a sofa bed you have somewhere to go to after a midnight bust up over who was actually snoring
