And now for something completely different...

European coaches and small powerful steam locomotives on a picturesque line in mid Wales! The Welshpool and Llanfair has been a favourite of mine for many years - especially it's original steam locomotives with the GW rebuilt chimney, dome, safety valve and number plates. Chunky and purposeful.

I have wanted an LGB garden railway for pretty much my whole life - I think it was my best friend Tim's Christmas present when I was 9 that started it all, an LGB starter set. His Dad soon purchased an extra locomotive and some second track and I remember the last summers of Primary School spending ages in Tim's garden created our very own railway properly playing trains rather than the finer scale modelling we both were into with our OO layouts.

Fast forward twenty years and with Dad's retirement and Elly turning 3 this summer I'm in the mood for re-living those childhood memories, so I sit here with a 95% certainty that this project is a goer...

So the EJ&KLR (Elly, James & Keith Light Railway) is born... with an LGB Big Train set and a Liliput diesel shunter plus some extra track. Where this journey will take us I'm not sure, but I'm hoping for lots of fun playing rather than modelling :)

An exciting time - and I can't wait to share more with you all soon. I'll be posting regular updates on my standalone blog and on G-scale Central - along with occasional updates here on RMWeb. Questions, comments and encouragement ALL welcomed please!

I do love a good G scale layout. I hope to one day have a G scale garden layout myself (or perhaps an even larger gauge!!!).

I look forward to seeing your models and track plans.

This is very exciting James - keep us posted

Hope we will still get to see your smaller scale stuff on here too :)

I like the idea of three generations doing this together, very nice idea James.

I do wonder though if you'll be able to stick solely to "playing". I bet you'll be tempted to start hacking locos and stock to pieces and rebuilding them :D (as per John T's great example).

Thank you very much one and all! It's great to see that people find my ramblings interesting and wish me well... a lottery win would certainly help this project though, I'm finding LGB really does maintain it's second hand value very well (so it's a good investment I keep telling myself). I've looked at the cheaper Bachmann US outline stuff, and the Playmobil, but they don't ignite that same childhood spark of excitement as the LGB stuff does - I know it's pricey and not really scale (as LGB do characacutures rather than scale models) but it's just got something about it :)

This really will be about playing - I'm not going to spend time on the stock, apart from running it. I want to get my 'playing' fix from this stuff - allowing my other projects to be more focussed. My OO RTR weathering and modifications will continue - and I'm focusing my scale efforts on the Manchester Ship Canal 1980s era layout in P4. That means selling the Rose Hill stuff and also means I'll stop looking for ways to house a roundy roundy OO layout in the house!

To give a taste I've still got a Bachmann 66 in bits and a Heljan 58 started on the OO workbench, I've got a 99% finished P4 Sentinel Shunter and all the plasticard to start building the running/inspection shed for Meadow Lane and I've got lots of little fiddly bits to work through on my OO wagons (brake blocks and brake discs mainly). Suffice to say that's really the focus of this blog on RMWeb and I'll continue to add topics of that nature on here :)

I've been really inspired by some absolutely awesome outdoor layouts and would recommend you all head over to the 'Outdoor' section of the forum and look for Andy Rush's Ruschbahn - truly outstanding.

Sounds like a great way to have fun! I know my occasional ventures into the garden with Lego trains have always been entertaining.

Do please keep us posted on here - I think it's great to see the variety of things that can interest one person - John is a poster child for this, but you could be the next :)

Thanks Will! We'll see, I'm going to try and stay focused - this is a father/son/grandaughter project - whereas the OO and P4 stuff is 'mine' so to speak. Taking a day off to collect the stuff in person next week, dead excited. Will try to resist 'opening' it until Christmas! Luckily it will stay at my parents until Christmas day so as long as Dad doesn't get it open early we should be ok!
