We need an Unreport button.

Now that's two topics locked on the request of a minority:

The thread was getting argumentative, had already been reported by more than one member and therefore locked. It's as simple as that. Some of the argumentative posts had also been hidden from view as there was no need for them to remain visible.

How about asking everyone else who had contributed to a topic? And at the very least when locking a topic it would be a courtesy to them to post an explanation before doing so.

Can we have an "Unreport" button? If the Unreports outnumber the Reports, it stays open?

Martin.

It's Andy's board. That means he sets the rules and if we want to be here we have to accept them.

Accepting them is not the same as agreeing with them. I think locking a topic but leaving it in place is an abomination. If the content is not acceptable on the board then the whole topic should be deleted. Otherwise it should be left open.

That's just me. In nearly 10 years running the Templot board I have never locked a topic and I never will. Each to his own.

But locking a topic without at least posting an explanation is just downright rude to those who have taken the trouble to contribute to it.

Martin.

Moderators are human. So, per definition they make mistakes, have personal preferences and off-days. The fact Andy trusts them to do a good job doesn't make them infallible. Most of the time they do do a good job, but on occasions, errors slip though. It's those occasions Martin wants fixed/rectified. IMO he has a valid point.

In the topic which was locked (as this one will soon be) it seemed there was unnecessary disagreement and a bit of antagonism going on, a moderator took the decision after reports to lock an old topic which trod over well worn ground (copyright). I'm very grateful that it was done actually as I was unfortunately at a close family-member funeral and not around to look at it. We've kept an eye on things here for 3578 consecutive days (thankfully not all day every day as I'd be locked up in a sanitorium by now) so I do get a bit bored when I read some reports which are unnecessarily indignant in their own right as well as topics/posts that feel outraged certain actions have been taken.

Sometimes there are other reasons for taking certain actions; if a particular topic hadn't been removed late on Christmas Eve no-one would have had any RMweb to look at as action was taken against a brute force attempt at denial of service (thanks to the member who observed certain things and reported it appropriately which enabled that action to be taken) - all because of some small-minded but clumsy idiot who had nothing better to do in the holiday season.

I would also like to take this opportunity too advise / remind members of the following:

  • That the forum is large and run in a way that has worked well for many years and that comparisons with other forums are unnecessary or relevant.
  • The number of threads actually locked is very small compared with the overall content of the forum.
  • Topics will be be locked, with or without some posts being hidden, or the whole topic itself hidden on the basis of of being either reactive due to content posted or preemptive based on our experience of the topic itself or the personalities involved.
  • Often actions are taken after discussion within the admin team or immediately, based on our experience as mentioned above, as being only a small team team were are not all on the forum 24/7
  • All reported content is considered and does not always lead to a thread being locked or any further action being taken
  • The admin team for such a size of forum is small and apart from Andy Y is made of voluntary members acting in often limited spare time, as they always have been, and are not employed by Warners which also adds a level of impartiality.
  • The admin team do not always have the time (as we might have logged on quickly, whilst in the middle of other personal things, solely to react to reported content) to post explanations to actions taken as this often leads to further time consuming correspondence.

I hope that this helps clarify the issue of locked topics, I also remind members of the rules of the forum that all members agree too abide by upon registration that can be read again here
